You forgot you weren’t Single?

Hi ladies,

I’m just curious what your opinion is in this: I’ve been talking and kind of flirting with this girl that is a teller at my bank for a few weeks.
she is always really friendly and thoughtful.
on Friday she recognized that I had been working in the heat and went in the back room to get me a cold bottled water. I was getting a couple $ k’s out to go to Lake Tahoe and play for the weekend and she asked if I was going alone. And then our conversation went to something I was very surprised with, we had in common and a big hobby of mine. This is what really drew me to her, and even though I felt the pressure from the other customers behind me she continued to chat like I was the only one there.
so fast forward to today, I went to the bank with intentions of asking her out. Patiently waiting for her to become available I started talking to her about the topic on Friday and then straight up asked if she was single. With an excited look on her face she said yes I’m and as fast as she said it she almost had a oh shit look on her face and says no I mean no I’m not single. Of course I kind of laughed and she looked embarrassed she said I feel so bad. I just brushed it off and jokingly said well maybe it’s a new relationship and you forgot. Anyways I wrapped it up after that, took my rejection and said see you later.
is it possible she actually forgot she was seeing someone or maybe she misunderstood me?

Aw man, that's really awkward! I feel for both you and the girl in that situation. A few possibilities I can think of:

- She genuinely forgot in the moment that she's not single. It happens - she was probably really enjoying chatting with you and it slipped her mind briefly.

- She's recently started seeing someone casually but it's not serious yet, so she's still figuring out where it's going. Might have been confused about labeling it.

- There could be some other personal factors/drama in her life that have her mind elsewhere. Relationships are complicated!

- Possibly she just wanted to let you down gently at first and then realized directly saying no was easiest.

Who knows - either way, don't take it too hard. At least you went for it! And it sounds like you handled it like a champ with your humor. She probably appreciated you not making it awkward. You never know, down the road things may change if it doesn't work out with whoever she's with now. In the meantime, keep chatting her up casually like normal. One door closed but plenty more fish and all that!

No it’s likely neither, often people come out with complete crap when asked something directly, she might have liked the flirting (loads of people naturally flirt), then you asked her and she came out with it. I’ve asked people their age and they have come out with complete rubbish and then had that rabbit in headlights look and went ‘noo I’m not 17 I’m 25’ etc.

A friend of mine is in the police and when stopping and asking people things like what is their name, they supply their mothers, sisters or a random one, not deliberately but just for being put on the spot.

Also she may well be single and not realised the direction the conversation was going, said single, then realised you were going to ask her out and away, she quickly changed it to not single to avoid saying no to you which would have been awkward and had her likely to justify why she would not.
