Should I date my 4th cousin?

So this past winter break I hung out with my 4th cousin ALOT...we were both pretty playfully flirting and we ended up kissing, we both really like each other but I don't know I want ur opinions what should we do...continue what wer doing or end it?

I don't get why all the girls are so grossed out about dating your 4th cousin. Its such a distant relation that it really shouldn't matter. And for all of the people who think that having kids with a cousin will create crazy deformed mutants, its not true. The reason that this myth started is that its more likely for two people who are related to have the same recessive gene for a disorder. However, genetic disorders that turn people into crazy deformed mutants are rare and if you do not have a recessive gene for the trait then you cannot give it to your kids. It is true that inbreeding over a long period of time greatly increases the risk of genetic disorders. That's why families that have repeatedly married their first cousins and siblings over many generations are prone to genetic disorders. So, even if you decide to have kids with your fourth cousin, it is highly unlikely that they would turn out abnormal.

Here's a bit that helps. I know my grandmother, great grandmother and great great grandmother and all of the children they had. So for me marrying my 2nd or 3rd cousins would be weird since that part of my mother's family is so tight knit. Same can be said about my mother's father's side going up one generation (grandparents) anyone outside of that I would never know I was related to outside of DNA test being that there is no connection there. So if you know your cousins then to me your close enough for it to be weird.

IDK man you obviously have some reservations about it or else you wouldn't be on here asking. Personally, the idea makes my skin crawl, but if you think you'll be ok with dippin in the family lineage, that's your perogative. I will tell you though, I don't think I could ever look at some one in a normal way if they told me they got it on with a cousin, 3rd 4th or other wise...ugh.

Were you raised together as cousins? If not then it's fine, fourth cousin is a long way down the line. Also, I watched this documentary once that if even first cousins have a baby it doesn't cause any birth defect sor mutations or anything and it was actually pretty common. This was a few years ago so I don't remember the numbers but it's more common than you think.

The documentry you watched was wrong. Where do you think the mythical stories of vampires came from. They were noble lords who were the byproduct of generational inbreeding, as a result they became anemic, had facial deformities and some were actually allergic to sunlight. Anyone who thinks it's no big deal to 'hook' up with a relative needs to put down the crack pipe and get a serious reality check!

I didn't say inbreeding was ok. I don't think everyone should go sleep with their sister or their aunt. And how do you know the documentary was wrong? Yeah, some inbreeding may cause those effects but cousin to cousin may not. Especially fourth cousins and that's what the question was about anyways.

History and strings of biological findings say the documentry is wrong, I used to study that along with geneoligy, get a clue! You have too many of the same chromosomes when you 'breed' with a relative causing weak links in the genes, scientific fact! McRoo, I don't know where your getting your information from, but my mom is a genetic counselor and I know a lot about this sort of thing. The only reason that inbreeding "causes" abnormalities is if the genetic disorder already exists within the family, and even if they already exists, a fourth cousin is such a far relation that it lessens the chances of passing it on dramatically.

And another thing, you can't just claim the documentary is wrong without having seen it first. Maybe it does have some misinformation, but there is no way of knowing that unless you have seen it. Different scientists will come to different conclusions, but it is a fact that my mom has had many different patients that were third, second, and even first cousins, whose children turned out fine. I'm not saying that it always turns out fine but the chances of it are much lower then you make it sound.
