The reflection of compliments is rarely genuine... You said something nice about them and they sent it right back to you to be nice. If you say one compliment and they think about you and tell you a different compliment then they are more likely to be telling you how they fell about you.

It's very polite to reflect a compliment. Think about how he said it, too. If he sounded genuine, then he probably was :)
