What do people mean when they say "don't wait too long to ask someone out?"

Obviously, it could mean to do it before someone else asks that person out. But is that all it means? It could also mean to ask before whatever infatuation/attraction between 2 people wears off right?

Oh I used to be so patient in my teens and miss out on the good stupid stuff cause I was waiting around for other people... now I hate waiting!
When I text with a guy, I give him max 1 week to ask me out, if he doesn't and I really like him, I will say "hey it would be really cool to meet you" if he isn't asking me after that, he is out.
