Do opposites attract or are similarities more your thing?

Question

I was thinking about this today so I would like to hear everyone's opinions. I realized that I'm the type who is usually attracted to opposites. I was looking back and realized I was always into girls who were the studious and honor class taking type. I was the complete opposite of that in high school. I was always the guy who just attended class and would either read a book or put his head down because I was tired from playing video games all night. Unfortunately girls like that were never into guys like me.. lol

I've matured since then but I realized I'm still into people who are my polar opposites. People who are too similar to me whether it be cultural or personality wise are always more buddies than love interests. What do you people think? What are your opinions on the subject?

My boyfriend is my polar opposite. I'm very reserved. I'm a bit of a loner, and a hermit. And he's quite the social butterfly, lol. He likes everyone, and makes new friends EVERYWHERE he goes. He's not content with having a quiet day at home. He's got to be constantly stimulated with some sort of activity. My perfect day is sitting at home reading a book, and he wants to rock climbing or swimming, or camping in a cave somewhere. Most people bore me or get on my nerves, but he loves everyone, and likes befriends everyone. I can't recall one time in the whole time we've known each other that I've ever heard him say something negative about someone.

I'm not sure why he felt drawn to me initially, but I liked him because he was so outgoing and was able to draw me out of my shell.

My ex boyfriend is also a social butterfly, like my current boyfriend. So I guess my exact opposite is "my type".

There have to be more similarities. this differences in oder for us or one of us to not get on each other nerves. 50/50 or 60/40 but not 70/30. Knowing myself, I would probably veiw them more as a friend, than boyfriend material. I'm just mostly talking about traits and interests

. If all of my boyfriends and I attended the same high school, we would have been opposites when it came to social cliques. I was the nerd/book worm. They would would have been categorized as a jock, goth, or skater. So appearance (and maybe culture) wise, I like someone who is the opposite of me.

People definitely have to have certain things in common for a relationship to work (core values, beliefs, etc). But opposite personalities can work very well together. Joking vs serious, social vs less social, logical vs emotional, etc. Opposites can bring out the best in each other.

Most people in relationships share important things about their ethnic, religous, and family backgrounds. But others, like me, are with someone from a totally different culture, although we have the same religous traditions.

I think most people want a blend of the familiar and the exotic in heir lives, in general, and that also applies to relationships. And the effort it takes to bridge cultural gaps builds a bond between people that could never exist between people who grew up near each other.

Sopm,etoimes we need to encounter the Other in order to find ourselves...being with someone 'foreign' helps us to decide who we want to be.

I voted A because In all my relationships we had more in common than different. Similar =/= Same so C could fit here too. There will be differences here and there but core values should be similar for me.

Similarities. For some people, opposites attract because they can give something to each other, something that's different than usual, and they can complement each other.

But for me, similarities are great because then you have so much in common to talk about.

Obviously there has to be some similarities, but I think I prefer girls who are more opposite of me.  I am a fairly shy and introverted person, but I am attracted to girls who are more adventurous and outgoing.  I like them to kind of push me out of my comfort zone and get me to go out and do stuff.  If I was dating someone like me we'd be sitting at home all the time.

I'm attracted to similar people. If I know they like the same music and games that I do, have similar moods and mindsets (introverted, easy going, same values), then I'm attracted to them. I don't have much to talk about with people who aren't like me.

I'm totally attracted to opposites. I've noticed that all my friends are different than me for example: I'm introvert, they're extrovert, I'm studious, they're not, but somehow our friendship works very well lol

When it comes to dating, I'm also attracted to opposites. Dating a guy who's similar to me would be boring, specially in terms of personality.

I like a blend, although I tend to go for opposites... I find that being with someone who likes the same things as me sounds like we would have loads to talk about, but we really don't.  Kind of like, you can't tell me something I already know. In a way it can be kind of dull and more like you're just friends with things in common. Most girls I've dated do their own thing and are interesting because they like things I've never been into or considered doing.

I'm attracted to opposites who have a few similarities, haha!

If we have NOTHING in common, it's difficult to have any fun together because we're constantly compromising, doing something we don't necessarily enjoy much (I had one relationship this way).

But if we have EVERYTHING in common, it's boring, there's no adventure, you'll never try anything new.

Sure, there is a very, very small group of people who defy this, but for the most part it's not true.

People want people who look like them, think like them, and are into the things they are into.

Well, it not being my choice the 2 guys I've been with (One am still with) are a lot different from me. I can't control who I like though so its just the way my brain was made I guess to be attracted to opposites just like magnets.

I prefer more similarities than opposites, but some opposites are neccessary. For instance, girls must share my top interests/hobbies, but they don't need to share all of them.
