I do it to share the visual experience of what I am enjoying. I only take one quick shot. I don't get weird about it.

If you're standing up and moving the plate towards the light and sprinkling salt in the air for "an action shot," okay, these people are being insane with it, but a quick snap of the cell phone... I'm all about it if it's something you either personally want to remember or want to share with others who may want to eat there or if it's something so strange an exotic that no one would believe you ate unless they saw the picture.
