I mean I could never but then again it is just an animal. What the difference between a cow and a dog? Both can form relationships with a human. It's very hypocritical to say you would never eat a dog or cat but then go and eat a steak for dinner

I always thought that is why you have them around---in case you have hard financial times then you have fresh meat walking around. lol
The only person who has a right to criticize someone’s choice of meat, is a vegan. I’m not a vegan so I have no place to criticize the type of meat someone eats (within reason, and it isn’t cannibalism).
I personally wouldn't but it's no better or worse than cow sheep goat or chicken

There are a couple of places around the world in which people eat animals that we consider pets alone in the US. According to Wiki, it is estimated that in southern China's Guangdong province people eat 10,000 cats per day. In Guangdong, cat meat is a main ingredient in the traditional dish "dragon, tiger, phoenix" (snake, cat, chicken), which is said to fortify the body.
What it boils down to is, if this were a life and death situation and Fido was the only thing around, I think a lot of people would be lying if they said they wouldn't eat the family pet, but in the US, hearing about a neighbor just casually chomping down on the family cat, would seem insane because these aren't considered meat in this country. I'm also unaware that there are any laws that prohibit this, but I think it would be highly frowned upon. Now in another country, if cat meat or dog meat or horse meat is what you eat, then it is. I can't judge that culture by American food standard nor would I want that judgment placed on the things we eat. It's actually not-common. Dog is a "hot" meat that is said to make you "hot" physically while you eat it. It's a backwoods tradition of mostly isolated country people. Like eating Buffalo Testicles and burning Cow Patties for fuel *shit*-- we used to use pig fat and pig shit to sap buildings in war; dig under a structure then dump in the flammable fat and/or shit, light on fire and watch the beams crumble with the corner of the fort.
Cats? That's not as common either, honestly. Buddhist cultures wouldn't have it. You'd need to find more traditional and ethnic Animists. Even then, they'd do it more for spiritual purposes twisted for financial gain. "White man want cat, therefore cat gods must want this as a test. Here; my choice of cat sacrifice and your reaction will dictate the outcome of my highly superstitious belief system"
"what is youtube?" that's the level of peasantry. It's easy to gawk at people stuck in time but the rest of us are amazed they're still around like a rare bird. It's permissible, but I wouldn't do it. Dogs & cats aren't exactly כשר ("kosher"; 「fit/proper」) as per divine stipulation Leviticus 11:3-8/Deuteronomy 14:4-8.
It still happens in Asia, but the popularity is diminishing. In the Philippines, it was something done in the in very rural areas, far from the cities with its foreign-influences. It became ILLEGAL in 11 February 1988 with the "Animal Welfare Act of 1998" (Republic Act 8485), which was amended in 03 October 2013 via R. A. 10631.

elibrary.judiciary.gov.ph/.../58330With the current generations the cat and dog eating is fading out because young people have pets. We have to remember that years ago people were starving in places like Korea because of war and poverty. People will eat all kinds of things if they are starving
. I remember reading a book written by a man who lived in the poor neighborhood in South Africa when they had apartheid. Some people in his area would actually sell insects to people to eat. He bought some time because he was so hungry. His dad was an alcoholic and they didn't have any money. Some people in South America eat guinea pigs. To me they are those cute animals who purr when you pet them.
I'm not keen on the eating of cats and dogs and the conditions these animals are kept in is pretty horrific as well as the slaughtering. The truth is we designate which animals we deem eatable. Some people who are Muslim and Jewish don't eat pork. That goes back to when pigs were fed trash and carried worms. Also, people won't eat bottom feeders like catfish or shell fish or animals that eat other animals like big cats, etc. Some people will eat a sheep or a cow but be squimish about eating a lamb or a calf even though they grow up to be cows and sheep. A 100 years ago it wasn't uncommon to eat horses or melt down their bones to make glue.
The honest truth if we are going to be completely humane we wouldn't be eating any animals. Then we wouldn't have to pick and choose which animals to eat. Again I personally don't agree with eating cats and dogs but I consider them pets not food sources. If someone is starving they can eat any animal they want.Well What is so different about eating a chicken and a dog?
In asia Dog could be like cattle to them while over here we view them as pets.
Obviously they don't buy dogs at a local market as pets and grow them and then eat them lmfao.
I am from korea and I know that Dog is a delicacy there but you won't be able to find them any where except if you go to like the rural areas. Lost its popularity.
Can't speak for other contries like china. I hear that you can get a lot of weird stuff there.People eat all sorts of other animals with no issue. But the fact that we keep dogs and cats as pets and form bonds with them makes us look at eating them a bit differently. I view cats and dogs as adorable pets so the thought of them being cooked and served is horrifying and wrong. But do I feel the same way about the cow or pig that was killed so I could eat a burger or bacon? No... See what I mean.
It’s not a popular opinion but yes... in Asia they raise dogs for meat. Cats I don’t believe they are raised for meat. When you are hungry people will eat people. China has gone through times where the whole country was starving. Someone I personally know had pigs but they were not allowed to eat them. The pigs got corn to eat... the family at times ate the corn husks. Boil the husks to make soup, cut the husks up small enough so you could eat them. We never discussed it but I am sure if a dog or a cat got too close to the pig farm... it would be dinner. For me, I don’t eat my pets... but if my family was starving, I would in a heart beat. Most of us are meat eaters and dog, cat, rat, earth worms and grubs... all meat.
I HAVE EATEN IT. Dogs, cats, AND rats. For me, dog and cat meat tastes like deer, and rat meat, it has a special taste to it. You have to peel the skin off of the bones and they usually grill and eat it with white rice. I was in Southeast Asia (Vietnam), but it's not popular and most people there actually think it's disgusting. Not everyone likes it. And they're also hard to find, you have to go to the countryside for it. But if you live in the city, you'll won't find it. Just chicken, fish, pork, beef, and duck.
Honestly, yes I think its fine. But like with other animals, id like them to be put down easya nd not beat while they are alive. Now, I love dogs, but, I understand that things happen for people to eat them, especially poverty. Dogs and cats are still animals, even if they are our pals. Id personally never eat them, but in poor countries, I can see it being a thing.
Food is food. People have dif cultures. If anyone grew up in a culture eating cats and dogs then they will see it as normal. People might think eating chickens or pigs are gross but many North Americans consume that.
It even boils down to what part of the animal you are esting because there are people who love bacon but hate pig feet. But I like pig feet mostly bc I grew up eating pig feet so i dont think it is weird or nasty. I just see it as food.😂😂It's ok to eat them , if i was stranded on an Island with dogs or cats and had no other food source i would eat them. But all Animals on this earth are meant for eating , just like Animals way other Animals just the way life is and Now it evolves. We just choose not to way dogs and cats cuz we consider them pets
It's not okay only because we have established them as domesticated pets. It's wrong to your pet but technically it's no more wrong to eat a cat than it is to eat a cow, let's not discriminate animals. It's just our collective imagination and associations established through the existing order.
While personally I find it distasteful logically it’s no different to eating chicken or livestock so eh, go for it. What I do object to however is the inhumane treatment and slaughter of the animals countries like that eat. Same with whales and live, twitching seafood on a plate
No, but let's say if your trapped in the woods alone and you see a dog or a cat and you need to eat to survive in order to give your body some sort of nourishment then it has to be done. But to kill cats and dogs when we have so many other selections of food at our disposal, nah I don't agree in the killing of pets like that. But eh, to each their own.
I don't think it's "normal" in Asia. It's my understanding it's kinda a redneck thing to do over there. Like, if it were the United States, you'd see folks at a football game yelling "Roll Tide!" while chowing down on a Rottweiler burger next to their sister-wife
Some say here there is no much difference between a cow, goat, horse, chicken, etc than a cat and dog. But I do see a difference, cow, sheep, chicken, etc are not raised to be domestic animals like dogs and cats. The other animals are raised to be in the wild and we see them in the wild or in farms and we dont raise them as our personal domestic pets inside our homes 24/7.
So for me no is not ok people to eat cats and dogs and I will never eat them I prefer eat cows, chickens, fish, calfs, etc. It’s hard in the western culture because we see them as pets, not food. Even if every Asian country outlawed eating dogs and cats like Vietnam, that won’t stop people from eating them illegally
Dogs and cats are companion animals, they shouldn't be eaten. In asia they often get eaten by the poor that find them on the streets to survive, cat and dog meat is far from tender as they have a lot of muscle. But if you have nothing its better then nothing.
Putting dogs and cats in the same category as chicken and cows is plain stupid... some animals can be eaten and some animals can't... cows and chickens clearly feed on plant based foods while some species of dogs and cats feed on other animals or even dead human carcass which will be indirect cannibalizim if we eat them
Eating them is one thing, but torturing them is unacceptable. And sadly, many dogs that are eaten in China will be killed in horrific ways.
You can eat any animal, just kill it humanely.
