In our day we didn't know what indoors were because we were out side all day long we came home for lunch and dinner you could hear the whistle 1/2 mile away that meant it was time for dinner.. you would walk in the house and hear the same thing everyday. Where have you been you are filthy. We would be covered in dirt our hair sticking up and out like we were in a hurricane and five natural disasters dirt has natural vitamins LOL in it is good for you you take somebody for my generation to the generation today and I'm still more healthier than a younger kid that has it been indoors all his life
I used to get yelled at for being dirty I told you not to get dirty LOL as if that was going to happen now I make a living at it
I have two rules the brush-off rule if it brushes off I'm eating it
And that is anybody looking rule if nobody saw me drop it and I can brush it up I'm eating it LOL little bit of dirt not going to hurt anybody I keep my floors pretty clean though but it is what it is if I'm hungry I'm going to eat it so I'm going with the 5 second rule10 Reply

So, if I drop a piece of toast and it lands on the kitchen floor buttered side down, I ain't eatin' it. The same goes for anything with a sticky or absorbent surface that I can't brush off or wash. And nope if the surface it lands on is obviously dirty or moist.
If I drop something like a piece of bread and pick it up right away, I'll pick it up, inspect it, maybe brush or blow it off, and eat it.
If I drop something hard like a cookie or chip (crisp, in your language), I don't care if it's been there for 10 minutes.
And I may eat certain hard, dry things like, for example nuts, even if I don't know how long they have been there. I might taste them cautiously. But if the taste and texture is fine, I won't worry about germs. I can imagine finding an M&M between the cushions of my sofa and eating it. LOL10 Reply
+1 yif it drops on the floor, I consider it gone. If it drops on the counter or stove and said counter or stove has been freshly cleaned and wiped down. Which I normally do right before I cook then its fair game and is going straight in my mouth, haha.

+1 yWell, in most instances I would never...
But dry food, on a dry, hard surface that I know is clean... I MIGHT if it's something I really want to eat.00 Reply

+1 yAssuming the floor is extremely dirty and the food can be picked up immediately (ex: it's not a loaded with sauce), I eat it if I can pick it up in less than 15 seconds.
Yes, I know, most nutritionists and medical personnel will tell you bacteria and other germs from the floor will infect the food and make you sick after just one second, but why waste good food just because it hit the floor?21 Reply- +1 y
*not extremely dirty

m +1 yA time limit like that is really one of the dumbest ideas. What food dropped on what surface, is the only valid question. You can drop an apple on the hard floor, pick it up the next day, wipe it off and eat it. I once spilled a bag of hard pretzels beside the sofa. Two hours later I noticed them, picked them up and ate them. But I would never eat dropped soft or moist food!

The moment it touch the ground or even kitchen platform (even though I clean the kitchen platform every day more than once), I'll put it in the dustbin. I can't eat food that's been dropped on the ground even if it was cleaned few minutes ago. 😣

+1 yHaving a dog, I never see any food hit the ground. I don't even notice that I dropped anything, cause she catches it before it hits the ground.
10 ReplyDry or wet? Big difference? I wouldn’t eat ice cream off the floor but I dropped some kale on the floor this morning and put that shit back in the blender

Anonymous(45 Plus)+1 yA few seconds if I’m the one eating it.. I consider it practice for my immune system. It would depend on where I dropped it though. If I’m making food for others I would not serve it if it hits the floor, not even for a few seconds.

+1 yDepends on the food and the floor. If it's like a face-down pizza maybe 14 hours if it's on a hard surface and I don't find any hair or anything in it.

For perfectly dry food like a piece of beef jerky, maybe 24 hours. Depends on what's on it and the floor and whatnot.
+1 yI would say 5 seconds, but it’s usually gone before I’ve realized something fell because the dogs grab it.
