@KostasKouvalis not sure where you ate but I have to disagree. There is some fantastic food in Italy, both in the cities and in the smaller villages. But, here's the thing: any food anywhere whether cuisine local to that country/city/locality or something not local can be prepared terribly or presented even worse. French food in New York. Italian food in Hong Kong. Japanese food in Paris. Not sure the premise of the question holds water.
I bet you Italian food in Hong Kong is better. Foreign food is usually better outside its home country
@KostasKouvalis The Italian food here in Malaysia also seems to taste better, both quality and the portion.
I have a pretty large percentage of Italians in my mother side of the family. If they read this you would probably get smacked with a large wooden spoon.
I know I would. Italians are worse than Americans when it comes to believing they're number 1
When I went to Italy, I didn't try the pizza there actually. I had pasta a lot, tasted really nice but no real difference to me
You didn't miss too much with the pizza, though some weren't bad especially in Venice. They cook their pasta hard and they skimp on the meat
Italian cuisine is good, most restaurants in Italy are shit or you have to stand at least half hour to get a table.
Yeah, I noticed a lot of places they won't come up to you if you don't call them over. The ones with long lines serve art on a plate

I have to disagree.
we traveled throughout north part of italy. The food in Florence was exceptional and good quality steaks all around. We also had pasta, pizza!! Can’t complain. Good food and good prices. Foods are so much cheaper there.
there was one restaurant we kinda found because their lunch schedule is short…and the lunch menu was limited. Their pasta was just okay. Very plain.
I did see food ordered by the locals who got there earlier and they looked good. One other restaurant had smaller portions…otherwise we had a really good time traveling throughout northern Italy and their food was very good. Many didn’t speak English well but they tried. Food in Siena, monteriggioni was very good from the local area.
pisa was not as memorable because we just drove by and checked out the tower, didn’t stay for food. Up to Lucca, Cinco Terre had great sea foods. Venice was okay…too touristy, can’t remember what the food was like lol Milan, lake Como, Lugano, all very good food.
One thing I agree is that, not a lot of chicken dishes. Lots of prosciutto, mushrooms, cheeses.
not sure where you ventured out. Hopefully check out the reviews before going.
Usually I'll check reviews of places in the city/area where I'm staying. Otherwise, I don't have time for that shit, especially if I have no planned route. However, I've gone to high rated places that ended up being shitty, so reviews can't always be trusted either
We look at pictures and low reviews.
Food is the other main reason why we travel so we tend to spend more time figuring out foods than sites 😂 the one time we didn’t get good food was because we didn’t have time to check.
As we chat here…I am doing my research for our next summer Asia travel. I am adding a few restaurants in Kyoto to the list.
Oh Lord... I wish you luck. You have no idea what you're getting into
What do you mean?
Did you research the rules they have there. You have dress a certain way. You have to sit a certain way. You have to eat your food in a certain order. You have to hold your chop sticks a certain way. Crazy people!
😂 where did you get that?
On internet and in Eyewitness guide book.
I hope you don’t believe everything you read.
I have traveled to Japan and other parts of Asia. I have also lived there for some months. I also have lots of friends there…. sigh…
I go because I am craving for Japanese seafood. The Japanese food here is good but some stuff can’t get here.
And no, they don’t dress that way. They are normal people like us who use chop sticks and live life like us.
Those who have to sit/eat/dress a certain why is when they go to special events for special dinners…and yes, I have attended one of those dinners…like how the emperor used to eat the 10 course meals and you have to bow all the time.
I disagree and I think these pics are biased hahaha. You chose horrible pics on purpose. Now go find some appetizing pics of Italian food. Smh I've been to Italy and the food looked way better than this.
I took these myself. I DO have good ones from Venice and a local market, but that's not the point here
The point being there is food in Italy that isn't appetizing? Sure, but there's shitty food in any country. Your country has shitty food believe it or not. This sir is propaganda. You walked around and just found the bad looking stuff. Who eats french fries in Italy anyway? I can't let you get away with this. Hahahaha this is madness.
No I didn't and no it isn't. Propaganda is Italian nationalist bullshit mentality that they are the best on earth. I wouldn't have to order French fries if their food wasn't shit
What Italian hurt you sur?
*sir
The asshole who charged me 145 Euros for a 50 Euro cab ride than had the nerve to claim I shorted him 50 Euros. But that's besides the point. They were in general nervous people and so fast and very disorganized. But that's also beside the point. I can't stand people who think so highly of themselves. I would be quiet if they would shut the fuck up and stop saying, "Italy the best! Italy the best!" They act as if they're the only ones who have good food, fashion and landmarks. Just shut the fuck up and stop telling the world you're the best, when you aren't.
I didn't hear single person while I was there in all of Venice, Rome or Florence say Italy the best, I never ate at one restaurant or cafe where they said Italian food is the greatest food ever. I was never even treated rudely at all in Italy.
You're making them out to be like it's France. You sure you weren't actually in France? The French claim to have the best cuisine and treat people in a snobby manner. I think you might have gone to France and thought you were in Italy haha
lol god this guy sounds like the italians murdered his family or something with the way he talks about them smh.
Mafia put a hit on him or something
To be fair, it's mostly Rome people!
The FRENCH? LMAO! Now YOU'RE buying into propaganda and a false narrative! The French are extremely humble, and pretty much every French person I've met has been extremely polite and courteous and they are some of the most pleasant people to be around. There were TONS of French tourists in Italy, and they are the complete opposite of the Italians. I'm 100% certain I wasn't in France, because I've been to France before, and the French are FAR more pleasant. Though I do wish I'd gone to France instead.
I don't understand American people. Always shitting on the French who are so well mannered, yet always worshipping those pesky Italians as if they were some kind of gods!
I too have been to France my friend and it's not a stereotype at all. They were rude on multiple occasions with me and dismissive and condescending. This happened to me multiple times in and around France. You know where it didn't happen? In Italy.
Germany was great, Belgium was great, Italy was great. France was a shitty experience 100 percent. Rude, rude people.
Oh, I see. So MY perceptions are false but yours are correct?
You really can't have a productive conversation about food with someone who thinks "french fries" is a better alternative to fresh Italian food. LOL I've been to every province on mainland Italy except one, over a period of 10 years. I've had some mediocre food a number of times, just the same as in EVERY country I've ever been to. So what?
But I've also had a HUGE number of spectacular meals in Italy, especially in Tuscany, and particularly in hole in the wall family places. Anyone who travels knows that each region has its own varieties, and if you expect everything to taste the same or be prepared the same way in every part of a country, you have no business being a food "critic". Like this dude. LOL
You haven't a clue about the food in Italy. Not one clue.
Okay. Enlighten me. You don't believe I clicked those in Italy? I visited 4 different provinces in Italy, so I think that's a pretty good data set
I'm headed for bed and don't have time right now for a culinary excursion. All I can say is it's entirely possible you made poor restaurant choices. There are also a few regions not very well known for their foods, like The Marche, or Friuli, and even a lot of Calabria. Also if in Rome, that can be very hit and miss too. I don't know where you were. If you leave a post here, I'll get back to you! But Toscana for example, has incredible food. Pisa and the region by the sea - amazing sea food.
THAT many poor restaurant choices?
Lazio (Rome), Venice and Pisa
Rome was hit and mess
Pisa had the WORST food. The two pasta dishes I posted were in Pisa
Venice was the best in terms of food
YES, there are that many poor restaurants, especially in the big cities. Any big city is going to have bad restaurants. Your experience is pretty much what I would have told you to expect. Rome is totally hit or miss, depending on where you go. There are so many tourist spots. You have to go deep into the neighborhoods to get the better food in Rome.
You also have to consider that certain Italian dishes you like from your home area may not be at ALL the way they're prepared in Italy. The biggest surprise is lasagna, or any kind of baked pasta. It's not at all like most non-Italians expect. There's also no such meat as "pepperoni". In Italy, pepperoni is peppers, usually yellow or red but not green, soaked in oil. If you order pepperoni on a pizza, that what you'll get.
Pisa is terrible for everything. I never recommend anyone going there. Venice is a mini version of Rome. When you get off the main drag where the regulars go, there are great bars and places to eat along the canals. The prices go down about 3 fold as well.
Tuscany, especially Northern Tuscany, has the best food by far. The food is SO good there that if you're a bad restaurant, you'll be out of business. If you ever go back, stay in Northern Tuscany, anywhere around Volterra, Castelnuevo Beredenga, Lajatico or even outside of Siena. Bon apetite!
The tourist places are dreadful but proper place the locals go are good
Mama mia, thee margarita is beTTer zan za burrger.
