Why don't you see fresh dates in shops (UK)?

I'm munching my way through a box of dried dates and something popped into my head. I've never eaten a fresh date, only dried ones. I'm sure you must get fresh ones in other countries so why do I never see them in the UK?

Yes I know you can't grow dates in the UK. You can't grow bananas either but we still get fresh ones.

I have no idea why the UK doesn't import them.

I love fresh Medjool dates.

When I was a little kid, we were driving toward the dessert and saw a roadside attraction that advertised date shakes. My mom said she wanted one, so we stopped. That's the first time I ever had a shake made with fresh dates. They are delicious.

There is an area in the southern California that is famous for growing dates. So I can get those. But I've bought dates from as far away as Palestine.

I have never eaten dates lole these you are talking about, but at the same time 7 have not had any dates since i came to Sweden (2005) but i had fresh ones in Hurghada in Egypt back in 2010.

Why? I would strongly guess it's because the climate, it's not suitable to grow dates trees in the UK like the middle easterns do.

Dates ferment easily like sugar cane. Rum is the essence of sugar cane, while Arabs never developed something useful from dates.

It seems like I've seen fresh dates here in Brussels in shops held by people from the Maghreb. Most sold dates are dried, but I'm still wondering what to do with those fresh ones. One of these I'm going to ask the shop owner.

Most times if you can't find something it is because there is a lack of demand for the product.

Same here in the US... lots of dried dates, never saw a fresh one.

Dates may not travel well. Much like the coconut dates are tropical, and don't grow in a temperate climate.
