Why do people insist on eating food that is bad for them?

Because they've spent their lives being told it's good for them. Fat and sugar aren't bad for you at all; they're vital to your survival, and if you think calories are bad, try going two or three days without them.
It's like saying that gasoline is bad for a car.
Truly MHO here. It's all about ratios and limiting intake to what is appropriate, not inherent "badness" to fat/salt/calories/sugar.
Because of ignorance and lack of consideration for their health

Other than taste they get a happy boost from it. Other things is that it's out of convenience. I know I eat lunchables for lunch even though I know it is not the healthiest thing, but it's easier when I get done cleaning and need something to eat. Same can be said for bottled waters.
Unhealthy food comes in a variety of forms. A few examples: soda pop, cheeseburgers, candy, and ice cream. What do these foods have in common? They all taste DELICIOUS. Why is that? Because they are high in sugar and/or fat. I am a former chef, and the chef who trained me told me: "The things to put in food that make people want to eat it are: fat, sugar, and salt. You combine two or three of them whatever way you want and people will love it." Examples: fat + sugar = doughnut, fat + salt = potato chips, sugar + salt = sea salt caramels. Fat + sugar + salt = kettlecorn.

To go one step further, why do we love fat and sugar so much? Because it is condensed energy, we have evolved to seek it out, much like ants. Put a pile of sugar out, and ants will come. Put a pile of artificial sweetener out, they will ignore it. There is no energy/caloric value to artificial sweetener. The more condensed the energy, the more we seek it. Humans have also created condensed versions of what would have otherwise been healthy food. Take olives vs. olive oil. In the wild, without processing, it's fine to eat olives. It takes 10 olives to give you a gram of fiber and 40 kcal. Compare that to a single tablespoon of olive oil at 120kcal. With no fiber. Just the fat from 30 olives condensed, and the dietary fibrous part thrown away. Many items we prepared in the restaurant were cooked with 1-3 tablespoons of olive oil.
Another thing about unhealthy food is that it is cheap. High fructose corn syrup, wheat, corn starch and others are used to sweeten and bulk up food, but it's not good for you. Food manufacturers process food in a way to reduce costs and they don't care about the negative health effects. You'll notice the cheap chicken or ham in the store will have salt water ("sodium solution") injected into it. They are literally injecting your food with salt water and charging you by the pound for it. It might be $1 cheaper per pound, but they just sold you a half pound of salt water at the ham price. This isn't the only practice.
Last item I will add before stepping off the soap box is people literally just don't know. They don't know what's good for them. They get tricked by labeling or have some false idea about what "health food" is. They go and buy smoothies from chain stores, or flavored yogurts that have MORE sugar per ounce than soda pop! They believe the lies about wheat, which the government made part of the "healthy food pyramid" because wheat is a cheap crop that makes the government money. People think muffins are healthy, but they are just rebranded cupcakes full of sugar, fat, and gluten. Heaps of examples, so it's simpler to say if it's not a fresh fruit, vegetable or unprocessed animal protein, it's likely not as good for you as people think.
Because in the 1920s the producers of carbohydrate crops funded propaganda about the "food pyramid" that inverted what humans had eaten for roughly ten thousand years of recorded history, minimising the importance of fats and proteins - the fuel and building materials the body is designed to function on best - in favour of a product that is highly addictive because of the dopamine rush it gives: refined sugar.
The average human before 1930 was more likely to die of old age than cancers, diabetes, heart disease, dementia or most modern illnesses that are predominantly adult onset chronic conditions. The change was a sudden increase in carbohydrate rich foods, processed fats originally used for industrial lubricants and worst of all a more sedentary lifestyle. Most people lived in semi-rural situations that included a patch of land that they grew at least some vegetables and fruits in. A lot of homes had a few chickens for both eggs and meat and countryside dwelling was a way of life that included a certain amount of subsistence food growth.
Artificial sweeteners are finally getting recognition as carcinogens and medical professionals are advising avoidance of them. The medical community is even waking up and realising that melanomas were almost unheard of before the advent of sunblock.
Coincidentally, look how many pharmaceutical products contain petrochemicals - especially gels, lotions and even some insulins. Chemicals known to be harmful that are hidden in everything we ingest, inject and apply to our bodies.
To quote Denis Leary's comedy bit off of "no cure for cancer" because, "it's always the yogurt, sprout eating motherf***ers that get run over by a guy who smoke 3 and half packs a day... sorry officer I didn't see him I was too busy SMOKIN"!
There are foods that are better for you and thier are foods that are less healthy for you. But there is no PERFECT food. And you can eat real real healthy, exercise everyday and still die of cancer or a heartattck real young. To quote Denis leary's "no cure for cancer" again, "remember Jim fix he did a jogging book, did a jogging video and dropped dead of a massive heartattack when"? "When he was f***ing jogging, that's right"! "What do bet it was a couple of smokers that found him the next day? Smoker#1: "hey isn't Jim fix? Smoker#2: "yeah". Smoker #1: "wow what a f***ing tragedy". Smoker#2: "come on let's go buy a couple boxes of cigarettes".
This post is not to say people should be a glutton or eat whatever they want whenever they want. It's just to highlight that you're going to be alive as long as God says and not one second more. So respect the temple God has given you (your body) and still remember to enjoy life because you're only given 1.
Because it’s good , and if you really think about it , what is really good for you? I know people that exercised daily , watched what they ate and they still dropped dead at a young age , so just live your life , whatever makes you happy is all that matters , our bodies are made for survival, we need food for energy , don’t listen to all those gimmicks trying to tell you to eat this , do that , it’s all money making sales pitch bullshit , if you don’t want to be overweight , just don’t overeat and stay active , you don’t need to kill yourself exercising , drink water mainly , our bodies need water that’s the best advice I can give , just try not to over indulge constantly and eat slower , I guarantee everyone here will see changes
The picture you have with the question answers the question for me. I had a cousin that said she wanted food that 'tasted really good" and really did not care if it was good for her health. She was very overweight, and died prematurely, and her sister did the same, and died of heart blockage. (in her fucking bathtub)
I have to pick and chose what I buy and eat, to stay at the weight, BMI that I know is best for me. Obesity is rampant in the US, and elsewhere.
We like sugar and fat, and starch, which of course is awful for us, if not eaten in moderation, and less often.
No food is bad - everything with moderation. 🤷♀️
If you can't moderate - you'll end up unhealthy and fat, if you manage to moderate - you can indulge in whatever.
Yes moderation is key
Over the 70+ years that I have been eating I have watched food go from the "Good List" to the "Bad List" and from the "Bad List" to the "Good List" many times. Just this year we have heard about five studies that have stated: 1) a little wine is good for you, )2 No wine is good for you, 3) a glass of wine is good for your heart, 4) etc. Back when I was in school we were told to eat " A reasonable amount from each food group".
Because they love the flavor comfort food, they probably don’t know how to cook at home and it’s easy just to grab something out of the store and pay for it on the spot and they also go for the taste like I was saying
BECAUSE IT'S YUMMY? THINGS THAT ARE YUMMY ARE GOOD FOR THE BELLY IS WHAT I GO BY!
@Kelly6 I AM IN THE DENIAL PHASE, GIVE ME A FEW MORE WEEKS!
There's a line in "Back to the Future" like that -- Marty walks into a 1950's soda shop and asks for a Tab, then a Pepsi-Free, and finally asks for something without any sugar. The owner hands him a black coffee.
I suppose they aren’t health conscious, or don’t know the toll it has on your body…
Maybe it’s all the beautiful advertising lol
It's usually cheaper. Sugar creates dopamine in your brain so it's like a drug you keep going back for more.
It's been hacked to satisfy all of our cravings. And it's the cheapest.
They don't.
Even water can be bad for you, in large quantities.
Well Americans are rebellious and don’t care about their health
I do bc it tastes good. But don't do it all the time.
Who cares if it's bad for you. everything can be considered " bad " for you as long it's not harming anyone else then who cares.
I think because they are delicious. I do that too sometimes. Do your diet but dont forget to live a little.
If it’s so bad for you how come im still doing fine
