Lol I just seen a video of a customer ordering ice cream and the worker could be heard damaging the machine. He said “uhhh actually it just broke”
There's actually a explanation and its that nd Donald has a contract with the company of those ice cream machines and something about them malfunctioning makes them both money, not sure on the strategy but there's a documentary on it or something similar I saw a while ago, only the workers of the ice cream machine company know how to work on those machines and its why they spend a lot of time broken, Cause they have to call in a repair man and inspector from that company to fix the machine and yes they are apparently rigged to break every once in a while, If you ask me it sounds like a promotion technique, people will crave it more when they are working, someshit like that, all I know is that it makes them money.

Its just an excuse for when it needs cleaning/getting cleaned.
Someone explained those machines need lot of maintenance and cleaning, services are astronomical expensive. Since most McDonald's "restaurants" are franchises, chiefs avoid servicing those machines to reduce costs.
As an ex McDonald's employee, it takes around 4 hours or more to clean that thing. We had to do that everyday. It wasn't fun.
