Once cooked I think they taste virtually the same plus have the same mouthfeel. They're basically the same vegetable once cooked.

If your talking about pumpkin you cook yourself, I think the flesh tastes more eccentric then sweet potato and the skeleton tastes more base then sweet potato. Sweet potato has a richer and more brazen flavour. If you mean pumpkin pie which has added ingredients outside of home cooked pumpkin which uses only the pumpkin as a homogenous piece, I would say they are similar but pumpkin pie is still more understudy like and liquid weak than sweet potato.

I don't think they taste the same. Because for Thanksgiving my mother would always make sweet potato casserole so I'm used to the taste. Also they would serve us sweet potato fries at school. 💀 I was hungry tho so I still ate them & dipped them in ketchup.

No, as far as my taste goes, there's a serious difference between a sweet potato and a pumpkin. The sweet potato has a more sugared taste which can be used as spice, while the pumpkin, being somewhat creamy, has a more neutral taste and needs other spices.

Major differences depending on the species of squash (pumpkin) used and the variety of sweet potato. Butternut squash and orange sweet potatoes are fairly similar, though, yes.

Particular kinds of Delicata squash have a flavor profile that includes hints of maple syrup or dates. Some Japanese kabocha types have a chestnut flavor to them. Quite a few tropical pumpkins aren't sweet at all. Purple-flesh and white-flesh sweet potatoes have their own oddities.

I use Hokaido pumpkins and sweet potatoes interchangably in a soup I make with garlic and ginger. I don't know if I could taste the difference, they're very similar.
