I’m getting ready to head to the store for the third time since last Sunday. It just seems three times in one week is too many trips. How often do you go?
1 yWe tend to go daily in Japan since we don't have space for the largest refrigerators and also with Japanese infrastructure, even the most rural areas often have grocery stores within convenient walking distance of any home.
I have one within just a five minute walk from my home called Aso (funny-sounding name to English speakers):

Also have another within about a 10-minute walk or so, a farmer's market within a 3-minute walk or so, etc. There are actually a bunch within short walking distance from my home. I don't even need to drive or take train.
In the US, it's so difficult to do anything without driving so I tended only shop for groceries once every week or two there. Yet in Japan, daily or close.
521 ReplyI sometimes think this might be one of the key reasons why we have such low obesity rates in Japan (I think I read that we have the lowest of the developed nations somewhere). Since we all shop for groceries on a daily basis, we can favor very fresh foods with a short shelf life over processed foods that last longer but tend to be more calorie-dense and nutrient-sparse. Also we get a good amount of walking or cycling each day doing daily errands like this as well as commuting to/from work.
- 1 y
That’s really interesting! At first I thought you were going to say it’s because you buy fresh food daily. I was imagining you going to market every day for the daily catch of sea food. 🤣
We do tend to buy fresh whole foods daily like very fresh fish, fresh meat, fresh veggies and fruits, but maybe more because the grocery stores are so conveniently nearby within walking distance. When I went to the US and lived there, I actually developed some unhealthy habits favoring more processed and preserved and frozen foods that last longer since I didn't want to drive to buy groceries every day. So I stocked up on a lot of frozen TV dinners like this:
![How often do you go grocery shopping?]()
Out of laziness. 😅 But once I returned to Japan, I favored fresh whole foods again.@Iron_Man I generally don't so much since it's just things we consume for the rest of the day. So if I buy a bottle of water (although my wife and I mostly just drink tap water), it's usually only like 2 liters, not gallons. Same with salt, flour, etc, I only buy 500g to 1kg at a time and that still lasts a very long time.
@Iron_Man Costco is pretty popular here although we lack Sam's Club and Wal-Mart and others like this. I like to get the pepperoni pizza there although I only go maybe once every few months.
For Kobe steak, I think I'm weird but I don't like even the highest-grade Wagyu beef that much. I'm the extreme oddball between my friends this way. I actually like some chewiness to a steak, not melt in the mouth tender. So I much prefer like a Texan USDA prime over Kobe steakhouse.@Iron_Man Also with the way my brain works, how good something tastes is actually based on its precise. Like McDonald's cheeseburger off the dollar menu to me tastes amazing since it only costs ~$1 USD! But if it costs $3 USD, I would think it would taste horrible with the frozen meat and horrible cheese. So I get sticker shocked when I eat Wagyu beef and maybe that's also why I don't like it so much. If it cost the same as a regular steak, maybe I'd like the taste more. 😂
* based on its price, sorry
@Iron_Man I might have to plan a trip soon! Actually interested in checking out Boston now.
That's a shame to hear that Swanson has gone downhill. I mainly loved those Hungry-Mans when I was a university student around 23 years ago. I could never manage to microwave it right though where the cranberry or brownie dessert wasn't partially frozen even though everything else was heated up. 😅
s 1 yYes, it’s better to cook it in the oven that’s the best heating. A microwave. Kind of makes it mushy but sometimes if somebody doesn’t have a good oven you have to do what you have to do. But I’m starting to get hungry now talking about all this food and Kobe steaks. Yeah you have to come back to America it’s really nice.
@Iron_Man Likewise! I think I lost my brain a bit during the pandemic situation with all the heavy drinking at home. Was starting to turn deranged with my incoherent and drunken ramblings. But quit drinking towards the end of last year. Think I can be reasonably coherent from now on! 😂 Very good to see you. 🤝

1 yAbout once very 2-3 weeks. That's a lot more than I used to go. In the not too distant past it was more like once every 5-6 weeks. When I go I tend to spend a lot of money, and stock up when I see a good deal. I have at least a year's worth of food, although it would get boring pretty quickly.

That’s crazy! Lol I think the longest I’ve ever gone between trips, is just under two weeks. Now, I rarely make a week.
- 1 y
I don't know the longest I've gone. It's at least three months.
Most of my life I ate most of my meals out. I've only been eating at home regularly for the last 15 years or so. Now I eat out about once a week.
1 yAre you picking on me again? Lol I try to make a list and only go once a week but there is always something I forget, even if it was on the list, so I usually have to make two trips. Sometimes my boyfriend is nice enough to stop just to grab a couple things if I ask, but it’s always a gamble with him, because he doesn’t always get exactly what I wanted. 😔
31 ReplySurely any boyfriend selfaware of his good fortune 🔮 should always be a good yes man to his girlfriend. I know I would be, usually. Usually 👀😅

Couple times weekly, when I want some snacks. (I live in an assisted living facility.)
- 1 y
@handsomelad70 Ah yeah. Sometimes living facilities can be hard, since you have to have someone wanting to take you there. But it's worth it, Plus, you get to go out somewhere at least and not stay inside your house or room.
Don't feel like that is too much... I go more than that. Sometimes 4 or 5 days each week and then maybe on the weekend. Since I live along, I buy things that do not "keep' for long and do not buy a ton of stuff for that reason, things spoil, like avocado and fresh fruits. .

Mr. Walrus, if your gorgeous wife would ask you to go to the store and get a few items, would you know how to get there? I’m just curious,

She’d have to give me the name of the store first, so I can set my GPS. Don’t forget, I’m highly intelligent! You’re not going to pull one over on me.

Once a week How many people are you buying for?
22 Reply- 1 y
Just two. Lol But I either forget to put something on the list and have to go back or I miscalculate how much I have of something and end up running out. Like today, I had to get milk, coffee and bread. I thought they would last until my next trip.
1 yWe are really trying to limit it, especially since we live rurally now. I try to aim for every 2 weeks
11 Reply- 1 y
It would really suck if I had a long way to travel but fortunately, my store is not even two miles away. Still a pain but not horrible. Lol
1 yHow much are you spending on these trips? If it's over $100 per trip, then 3 times in a week is a lot
22 Reply- 1 y
The first trip is always over a hundred. The trips after is usually to get things we ran out of that I didn’t think we would. For example, today, I’m getting coffee, bread and milk.
- 1 y
That makes sense, I mean I go to pick up things like snacks or soda and things here and there too

1 yI go twice a week but i always spend over a $100 it’s getting so expensive, can’t wait to grow most of my own veggies.
12 Reply- 1 y
It is expensive, no doubt. I basically get the same things every time I go, with a few exceptions, what used to cost 120, maybe 125, is now about 160ish or even a little over.
