I like somewhere between the first two photos, more than just grill marks but not black all over. Maybe "well-charred" in this diagram:

  @82lynx I enjoy it quite a bit but I've never been a huge fan of the taste of hot dogs or sausages in general. So I think charring it well (but not to the point of oblivion) adds something to the taste that I really enjoy, even some degree of bitterness which I like.
