Yes, I know human food isn't ideal for pets and some foods are dangerous. But we've all given the dog lasagne and the horse a bag of Cheetos. So come on own up, how much of your pet's diet is topped up with leftovers and the such?
Zero! I'm extremely strict about this. My wife isn't and wants to do things like cook fish or chicken without any salt for our cats.
This is where I bring the iron fist down and say, "No! We're not feeding our cats such food." We have a very healthy and protein-rich formula (precisely formulated for their age and we have two different formulas) we feed to our cats for optimum health.
My wife has this bizarre tendency to humanize our cats so she thinks cats will get bored eating the exact same food every day and wants variety for maximum happiness. Yet I've looked into it and cats tend to actually become very stressed and can even have trouble with digestion if they eat something new all the time. I show her all this but there's still this type of empathy misfire thing she has where she gets disappointed and still wants to feed them human food.
I might come across so stubborn and lacking in leniency here but I had a pet dog one time as a boy who died very prematurely and my mother had the same habit of feeding him human food, including food very toxic to dogs like onions and chocolate. That was so sad to me and I tried to scold my mother every time she did it but she ignored me. So I'm very strict about this with my wife. My house, my rules.
It's the only time I've ever had to pull rank on my wife this way. We can almost always negotiate and arrive at a compromise over everything else. Yet for this topic, there's no compromise from my view.
What I've noticed with mine (they were formerly strays) is that they often catch and torture and kill the critters (in a rather brutal and cruel way) but don't actually tend to eat them. They play with their dying and dead bodies for a while and then just leave them there. If they were hungry, they might, but I think with a steady source of food, they tend to just kill for sport rather than kill for food.
None. One dog 15 lbs, one dog 7 lbs. Grain-free meat-based kibble with a little water to soften, powder nutrients mixed in, and a drop of CBD oil for inflammation. Enough food to make them slightly plump, so I'm not feeling ribcage when I pet them, but not overweight.
@StudyingAuthor I don't think there's anything innately wrong with giving dogs "people food". If I were to give my dogs people food, it would probably be mostly natural, animal-based stuff. Chicken, turkey, pork, anything uncured, eggs, maybe cheese. That sort of thing. But I don't.
Our cat only gets a little bit. Sometimes if we eat chicken for dinner, we'll give him some in his bowl with his wet cat food. I tend to give him vanilla ice cream and whipped cream, so he'll leave everybody else alone while they eat ice cream. Both me and him love the whipped cream, but he doesn't get the can of it like I do. Sometimes he'll want potato chips, popcorn, bread, etc. and we'll give him a little bit that he can chew up. I'll sometimes give him a little bit of shredded cheese if I use it for my sandwich or salad. Anything else and it would be potatoes, he loves potatoes!
I have two cats. They get a little bit of fish if we get fish n chips (no batter). One likes green things, he literally just steals them will run off with lettuce from the shopping in his mouth 🤣 we let him eat some when making food just to make him go away. And they both get either sardines or tuna from a can (fresh spring water no added salt) with their dinner every night for added omega 3 (one has acne and omega 3 is great for skin issues)
We only fed our dog human food when it was close to dying, we gave him an expensive cut of steak cause we knew he would be gone soon. I believe in a resurrection and sometimes I wondered if he would reappear one day, no evidence only humans go to heaven.
My two do get a share from what's left from dinner - in a small enough portion. I sort out anything spicy, salty or too 'fatty', and such. Where some fat is good for a healthy fur. Whenever it's possible, I secure some bone for them as well, and see to some meat as well. During the day they get nothing of that kind. To only offer dry food looks wrong to me; that's not their natural way. They will not get something that's overly sweet.
Mine will get a tiny taste of a safe part of a meal. I figure they have to endure the smells of the cooking, it's only fair. If we are eating something they can't have there is the special dog jerky bag to satisfy. My dogs have always settled after it too. Train away from begging.
Before my dog had to be put down I gave him everything and anything. He would sit down for dinner with us and then clean all the plates afterwards. He really liked candy (especially M&M’s). It really didn’t matter he had a cast iron stomach…… before the haters chime in about the chocolate you should know he was 17 years old when he was put down and he just couldn’t get around anymore.
The horses get any non meat scraps, like bread, lettuce, and such. About once a month I buy them donuts 🍩 and they line right up for their treats.

I give my dog apples (I usually bite off a piece then give it to him) corn, celery, and lunch meat. He loves them all, I don't give him anything else since great danes have weak stomachs.
I try to vary what my 2 cats eat. There is industrial cat food of different brands, as well dry as wet. As a treat cheese spread, but never sugared stuff or things that are bad for their health. Often, when I buy some meat, chicken or fish, I just share it with them.
I am a soft touch for dogs so mine have had a lot. I now try and give them chicken and turkey but not things that are really bad for them… you know, the things I eat.
He’s older now so he gets more timbits than he did before. But my roommate gives him more scraps than I do. So maybe 3% of his diet is human food while 97% is the normal food
We feed our dog and cat with raw meat so I guess that's human food, the dog will sometimes get a bit of leftovers mixed in but we never give them the unhealthy stuff.
All she wants, she doesn’t like the words “it is mine’ or the word “no”. Besides she gives you that sad I’m dying of hunger look. If all else fails she will lay on the floor and pout.
We let her eat popcorn and carrots as well as meat we don't finish and Fisk skins. We give them to her when we want to regardless of when her mealtimes are.
