As a single male in Austin, TX, I spend about $80/week on groceries. I usually shop at Target or H-E-B. Some say that’s too much or they’re surprised it’s that small given I don’t eat out much.
From the too much camp:
- One guy says he spends $50/week at H-E-B. But he literally only cooks one meal: a meat (either beef, chicken, or turkey), a starch (rice or potato), and a random vegetable he picks for the week. He says he’s been eating the same meal for 2 years. I cannot do that, I like some diversity in my meals. He barely eats out and only eats something different when his mom comes to visit.
- Then I have a group of friends, they’re married couples. They only spend $80/week now that they’re married, they spent $50-60/week when they were single. They complain that Target is too expensive and recommend that I shop at Aldi instead. But, I will argue that they spend more on food because they eat out a lot. Even one of the husbands complained to me about his wife gaining 60 pounds. 🥴
From the too little camp:
- One guy says he spends $200/week on groceries because he never touches a restaurant. But I’d say his case is extreme because he buys a lot of meat compared to most people and he barbecues often.
What do you think is a good amount of money per week for a single person to spend on groceries? How much do you spend?
