Did you know certain food items at grocery stores aren't taxed? It blew my mind! How many of you are just finding this out?

I did not know this. I looked it up for the state of California and it basically says any food that is premade specifically for immediate consumption is tax exempt. It also says clothing and certain medicines are exempt. You're bored too Wally?

It's kind of vague though, does that include hot dogs, cereal, bread, because you can eat that right away. Same as fresh fruits and veggies. I don't fucking know!

My understanding is it has to be prepared by the actual store for consumption. For example, there's a buffet where I shop, they have hot chicken wings, shrimp, ribs etc, that would be taxable because the store prepared it for immediate consumption. If it's brought to the store to be sold, it's tax exempt. I THINK.

I know Florida only taxed food that was ready for "immediate consumption". Any deli foods, premade sandwiches, or hot dinners. I think WI is the same, not sure though but I'm curious now.

I think it's very similar here. Any fresh meats and produce is tax exempt but I think everything else is taxed. Maybe not canned goods.

I always knew food, for the most part, is tax exempt but I saw Lacie mentioned in CA clothing is also tax exempt. It's also exempt in my state. That's news to me!

I can't speak for American states these days, but in Australia, many basic food items are exempt from Goods and Services Tax. This means you don't pay the additional 10% tax on these items when you purchase them at the grocery store.
