English muffins were invented in New York in 1894 by Samuel Bath Thomas, an English immigrant. They were originally called "toaster crumpets" and were immediately popular as a more elegant alternative to toast.

I'm am talking about what Americans call English muffins, like they use in McDonald's Egg McMuffins.
