Have you ever experienced food poisoning? If yes, how did you get it?

I’ve never had it “proven” , I think people can often assume and perhaps correctly but it may not always be. I remember sitting some exams around food safety and hygiene many years ago when I worked in catering and the trainer saying “just remember , unless it’s coming out both ends , it’s likely not food poisoning “ . That stuck in my head.
I will never forget being in kavos on the island of Crete , Greece. For many reasons but this one especially.. I had been out for lunch , had a couple of drinks ( literally 2 or 3 ) and on my way back to the apartment I picked up a gyro from a street vendor. It was so tasty and I thought nothing of it , but the next day from about mid morning I felt increasingly unwell , 🤮💩💨. It got so bad that I had to literally crawl from the bathroom where I had made camp on the cool floor tiles , to the phone and call the concierge to get me a doctor. The doctor came and immediately called the paramedics and I was subsequently treated at a general hospital in Crete for ‘suspected’ food poisoning and dehydration.
There has been other times I have been unwell and suspected it was something I ate but NEVER nearly as bad as that experience.
I've encountered it a few times, the last time I did I think it was in winter 2013, just had some bad chicken on a cutting board that wasn't cleaned properly. I threw up probably like 15 times in one day to the point where I had to wake up my mom so she'd drive me to the hospital and leave the house at 3am. I walked into the hospital, sat in the waiting area with a severe nauseous feeling, I asked the nurse can I have a bucket or something if I throw up in the washroom? My stomach was churning and I felt I was kind of holding back throwing up and I just let it out and I barfed so bad it hurt and I walked out and this guy looked at me mortified. The nurse was super helpful she's like let me get you hooked up to an IV.
But throwing up that last time did the trick and getting hooked up to an IV helped, probably left the hospital an hour later I felt better, didn't feel nauseous, took it easy with eating or drinking stuff. People gotta be careful what they eat outdoors because you don't know how your food is being stored, I've heard nasty stories recently of mice or cockroaches crawling on food in restaurants, that can taint someone's food and make them sick. I'm usually on top of things if something in the fridge expires, I toss it out in the garbage.
Once I spent 4 day on techno festival. Came home and my fridge was slightly open, some pot blocked the door. I didn't care and made battered cheese. Ate the cheese with Ketchup and went for a long sleep. Morning after I woke up with huge headache and nausea. Took two ibuprofen but it didn't went better. Looked in the fridge and noticed blue-violet mold on ketchup I ate day before. Called a friend who is internist, she told me I should eat a pack activated charcoal pills and drink a lot of water. If it doesn't get better in few hours I should call an ambulance.
Fortunately it went better at evening but it was the worst headache I even head that lasted over hours. I took even an opioid that is 30 times stronger than Morphine and it didn't help.
I’ve only ever had minor food poisoning, nothing a quick barf or bad poop couldn’t solve (once both at the same time). I do remember a couple of times where I ended up getting a fever, once when I was a child and I remember every time I shivered on the couch my mother would throw another blanket on top of me. I ended up with probably every piece of linen in that house on my body at one point. More recently in adulthood, I had some spinach that was definitely too old to consume but I ate it anyway because I didn’t really know what bad spinach smelled like. I got a fever then too, very minor, but it broke by morning.
Yes, I've had the unfortunate experience of food poisoning once. I was in a small street food market in a quaint town exploring local delicacies. The tantalizing aroma from a seafood stall drew me in. I indulged in some shellfish, but perhaps it wasn't as fresh as it should have been. 😅 Despite the queasy aftermath, it didn’t deter me from continuing my culinary journeys. Each adventure is a lesson in itself, teaching me more about the art of choosing wisely while exploring local flavors.

Yes.
The first time was from a Mexican restaurant that my friends and I stopped at on our way to Yosemite for a 5 day backpacking trip. As soon as we got to the June Lake parking lot, I puked my guts out.
I tried to press on, but about an hour later on the trail, I had to stop and had the most evil diarrhea. I pressed on again but by the end of the day, I was out of gas and couldn't continue. I pitched my tent next to a lake and, the next day, my two friends went on without me. I stayed there until they returned.
Another time, I contracted food poisoning from a Chili's Restaurant. Only an hour or so after eating, I came down with vomiting and diarrhea and was sick as a dog for at least a day.
Your friends left you? That's crazy!
@KrakenAttackin maybe he suggested that and insisted
Maybe, but I wouldn't leave a seriously ill friend.
@KrakenAttackin i wouldn’t do that either
I was probably 27 or 28 years old when we went on that backpacking trip.
We were heading for a place called Thousand Island Lake. It was less than a day's walk from where I stopped.
That next morning, I wasn't puking or anything and I had slept well, I was just burned out. So I told my two friends to go ahead without me. I had everything I needed for a couple of days.
So they hiked to the lake, camped there that night, and came back the next day.
Many times. The worst case of it I've ever had was from butter chicken that I’d ordered from a local Indian takeaway shop. I assume the chicken wasn’t fully cooked or they weren’t hygienic when they prepared the dish. I was vomiting so much for like 7 hours, 3 hours after eating it.
Yes and it was awful. About 25 years ago my friend got engaged, and he and his bride to be had a potluck engagement party. I was very sick for the next five days. I had diarrhea about every 20 minutes and severe abdominal pain. I went to a doctor and got some medication. My friend said that he had not heard of anyone else getting sick after the party, but he might not have known about it if it did happen. I still had some intestinal pain even 6 months later.
@liaraven Recently I visited that married couple as I had not seen them in over 20 years. We were talking a lot about "the old days", and the subject of that party came up. I mentioned being that sick afterwards and they didn't say anything. It probably wasn't that polite of me to bring it up as that isn't how you want parties to be remembered. Oh well it wasn't like I was being accusational at all.
yes, and from those exactly... eggs
also, a second time... got it from some shady taco stand, just in front of a parking lot
which makes me think of the hundreds, literally hundreds of times I've had tacos from the streets of Mexico... and I didn't get food poisoning, lmao... except for that one time
@NathanDavis shady taco stands are very risky, but non shady taco stands are good lol
I've risked it a couple of times...
Unfortunately, YES, I have had food poisoning. It was several years ago. A group of us guys from work had dinner at a very well-known restaurant in Pittsburgh PA (I won't mention its name). We all had Alaskan King crab, and all got food poisoning. I spent the entire night on the bathroom floor in my apartment. The other guys suffered too, each on their own.
Yes, an ''international'' one.
I got it from spoilt seafood in a Vietnamese restaurant in France, that had been suggested to go to by my Russian co-worker when we were on a field trip for a British company on behalf of my German employer.
I ate at this place in Florida just before I was going to fly home. I got really sick on the plane. Too bad because it was the only time I ever got upgraded to First Class and there was free champagne. I spent the next two days sick in bed.
At the point when individuals eat or drink something defiled with microbes, they can become ill with food contamination. Frequently, individuals get food contamination from creature based food varieties — like meat, poultry, eggs, dairy items, and fish. In any case, unwashed natural products, vegetables, and other crude food sources likewise can be sullied and make individuals wiped out.
Yes, at a potluck at work (no idea what did it specifically), but I've never ate at another potluck again since then. I don't even share food with people anymore because of it.
Fortunately not but I had a friend who was constantly getting sick and couldn't figure out why until we saw how he reheated the chicken and rice dish he made 🙃
He undercooked the chicken so it wouldn't be dry when he reheated it... AND the rice was still cold in the middle when he reheated it. Salmonella and bacillus cereus 👍🏼💀
Yes. And I would like to make a comment about food poisoning pathogens. People tend to blame whatever the last thing they ate for their food poisoning. However, the time it takes for food poisoning pathogens to affect the body depends on the type of pathogen. For example, some pathogens cause symptoms to appear within 30 minutes, while others can take up to 70 days. So, that burger or taco you ate at that restaurant early in the day might not be the cause of your distress.
Your exactly right , it’s a very common misconception that people blame the last thing they ate. Working in catering for many years and having to take courses and exams on food safety and hygiene this was always discussed at length.
@Sure thing. Most people don't know that. I learned bc. I had a commercial kitchen license in my name and had to take training to get the license.
I probably have and didn't know it, I've had some bad days in the bathroom.. I've eaten some pretty sketchy stuff Lia..
NGL, some food from this Ghana restaurant.. LOL.. The folks were nice, but... Nah..
Yes, I gave it to myself.. I ate a bluish egg.. why? I don't know since I knew it was bad but I wanted eggs and I just though "well it won't kill me".. lol
I was sick in bed for three days vomiting and I just was drinking orange juice and having Tylenol 😂
A few times. Rough ride, lmao.
The one time I can readily identify, I had some leftover Chinese food, but I forgot to put the leftover duck sauce in the fridge. I used it about maybe 12+ hours later, thinking it wouldn’t be a big deal.
ONE-TIME MISTAKE, lmao
No, but when I hear about it, it sounds awful then also hear about people losing weight and things terrible
Yep. Got it at a steakhouse when I met my ex girlfriend's parents for the first time.
We got home and went to bed, was waking up all night puking with diarrhea.
Yes, and it was awful. I got sick at 6 flags Magic Mountain. I went to the doctors I was sick for a week.
I think it was chile cheese fries
only as a kid. mainly from eating questionable food and one time from eating way too much at a buffet
Yes, I got from eating Taco Bell once. I was sick for four days!🤮
Yeah...
Yes, a few times and it was absolutely awful.
I ate some spoiled beans. I just ended up throwing up 3 times and was basically good to go after that.
Yes, I ate a slice of my grandma’s blueberry tart. Delicious, but it had sat out for too long in the heat.
Kentucky Fried chicken restaurant, two times in a row is six months apart... it was the time we retried it. It was bad enough to be in the hospital three days both times and the symptoms lasted over a week.
There was this one time I consumed too much milk. The milk was fine, I just had too much at once and threw it all up
Today, I was in a hurry, and my pancakes were a little raw, but still ended up eating them, By 2nd period I swear I thought I was gonna shit my pants.
Yikes :o
i definitely know that feeling tho lol
Many times. But I think it was a combination of stress and food poisoning. Both were abroad once in China and I was all around miserable. Second time in Costa Rica again miserable
I got a stomach flue from drinking steamed apple juice at Starbucks. I threw up all day.
A bad Mexican Pizza from Taco Bell. I never ate there again.
I have. It was something I did to myself. I ate some chili that I made the day before & got left out over night. Never thought about it. Tasted fine to me. I was in the hospital for 3 days.
bad bacon and first time was at captain jack's
Undercooked burger patty.
oh yeah definitely. i had some taco bell one Christmas eve then threw up on Christmas day and was knocked out all day. it sucked
Yes, bad milk.
@KittygosMeoWW
Yes, that’s very common
Oh yeah, some chicken places are absolutely terrible; My personal solution is to drink a lot and suffer through it, because I'm an idiot.
Yeah, from eating too much barracuda and got ciguatera poisoning. It was terrible.
No, this has never happened to me.
Something may be missing or not💫✨📱💢takes time for healing
I'm not into poisoning... but have some issues related loose motion...
do you which two foods not good to eat together
Multiple times over the years.
I'm not sure, maybe, few years ago. But I'm not certain what it was.
By a pizza, was bed bound for 2 weeks. Took me years to eat pizza again
Yeah, burger king nuggets
Yes. From undercooked shrimp at Applebees.
Fortunately, I have not.
Yeah ate some street food that wasn't great
yes just had to let it run it's course
Not fun 🤢🤮
Yeap. Undercooking
I've had salmonella twice.
Yes. Chinese restaurant.
