What makes you go back to a restaurant?

What is it exactly that makes you go back to a restaurant after a first positive experience:

- the food they serve

- the setting

- or the service given by the people who work there?

I think that, if option # 1 is fulfilled, what sets one place apart from the other is the service.

LONG AGO, tired and hungry, I stopped in a popular tacqueria with my spouse. After we'd waited 45 minutes and asked repeatedly what the holdup was: we didn't even have chips or a visit by waitstaff, the manager came by and said someone was sick and the wait was going to continue, so, we left.

This wasn't a high-end eatery, so there was no incentive to stay. But, their excuse was pathetic.

If being short of one person was holding up meals by an hour per table, then DON'T SEAT PEOPLE YOU CAN'T SERVE in a timely manner! But they wanted the same money from patrons who would be poorly served! How is this good business!!

It's been 30 years. I've never been back. There are so many places where I can get good service AND food, and people pride themselves on giving both. I spend my money in those places. The lack of EITHER ruins a meal.

I'll go back if the food and prices are good. Ambiance is also nice.

What makes me not want to go back to a restaurant is poor service, cold food, or serving me something other than what I ordered... yes, that happened a few times.

Good quality food. I can deal with “bad” service because I know they have been working really hard and dealing with all kinds of crazy rude customers, or managers or coworkers or personal life …I generally talk to them a little to help them relaxed so they can continue their day.
the food makes the day… I’ll let them know to tell the cook that they are doing a great job.
sometimes the cook comes out to greet is… that’s even better.

For me it's the ambience first. The server 2nd. A the food last.
If I am not comfortable in the atmosphere of the restaurant and if my server is uptight and doesn't make me feel comfortable then how am I supposed to enjoy my meal?

All of the above. If you can deliver on all fronts then you will have a successful restaurant. A good wine list is helpful too.
