For cooking rice i was taught to always wash it.

i mostly don't. simply cause if you're cooking it with too much water and then straining it, it doesn't matter. if you don't wash it and then you use a rice cooker, it will burn the starch on the bottom. but if you're just casting away the cooking water, then that's no issue.
