In the UK you get 2 types, long straight ones that need to be grown under cover and short dumpy ridge cucumbers that can be grown outdoors in the south. Obviously it's cheaper to grow the outdoors type but the public prefers the smooth indoor type. Americans are simply happy with outdoor type

You can get any style of cucumber according to what is popular where you live. I hae no idea why one type has caught on in one part of the world. Might be where a certain variety grows best and has the fewest pests.

I prefer English cucumbers in salads because they're extra crunchy. I've never seen nor heard of Persion cukes, but I bet popular varieties have to do with what grows best in nearby regions.

However due inner gas storage you can find both types in groceries over entire year. In the past only those smooth ones were available in winter time because they are better for glass houses.

it has something to do with natural selection. Maybe in the US there is a species of animal that only eats smooth textures food so it eats all the smooth cucumbers but does not touch the bumpy ones.
