Is a hotdog actually a sandwich or its own thing?

If a sandwich is about things stuffed in tubular shaped bread, then a hotdog is a sandwich.

But we call it a hotdog because "sandwich à la saucisse et au ketchup" isn't really practical a name. Maybe we call it a sandwich when classifying it among other food. Also, nobody bothered to translate that one because it would be bad publicity to imply pets we eat, I guess

Well, the German inventor called them „Frankfurter“. Not sure at what point they became Hot Dogs, but it’s definitely different from sandwiches.

I had a couple of foreigners over and I grilled some hot dogs. When I served them one asked, what are these? I said they were hot dogs. When I went to get the drinks one of them asked the other, "What part of the dog did you get?" 😂🤣😅
