There used to be drinking fountains everywhere. Hell, we used to drink water from the garden hose when we were kids.

Somehow, people got convinced that bottled water was pure and they started paying for it without knowing if it is contaminated or not. Fancy branding makes it seem even more appealing.

Water is essential, but tap water in some places has become polluted by mines, fracking, industrial pollution, data centers, etc., and people are forced to buy less toxic water from bottling corporations. Industry externalizes its costs by polluting and average people pay the price.

I am fortunate to have had my own well for the past 24 years. The water is pure. I take it with me when I travel. I hate the idea of buying bottled water in plastic containers.

But I agree it is capitalism. As per I once read or heard one talk about successful "marketing" as (by meaning not word): You sell a bottle of water for a 1$ in normal situations, but if someone's so thirsty then for 1.5$, if at a remote place and water is not much accessable then for 5$.. yet if there's a forest fire then 100$.

Or something like that.. but I clearly remember the forest fire from 1-1.5$ up to 100$.
The idea is that when there are no boundaries.. issues arise. I mean, there's nothing such as just more and more and more profit. It actually bumps into other things by the nature of life and how things go.

No idea. We try to not buy bottled water. We drive 30 minutes once a month to a few towns away to refill our 5 5 gallon jugs. The spring water tastes fresh and crisp. It’s really cold coming down from the mountains.
we refill our stainless steel water bottles before we go out.
if we must buy, we just buy it. We never really compare prices since we don’t drink anything else. We wouldn’t know.

it varies... depending on the region and their dynamics

as someone who has lived at the border for many years... I've noticed it all my life

whether is Texas or Mexico and how close you are to the border, the prices will always vary, so it is about the production and transportation... people buy a whole lot more soft drinks than they buy water, but people still want and need water... so they sell it more expensive just because it costs more to get it to the final consumer

but nowadays... you can find bottles of water that are stupidly expensive just because of the brand and that's marketing... and you also have the cases like Walmart, in which they will rise or drop prices of both water, and soft drinks and anything else... if the competition gets more customers

I agree 100% gut health is very important because your gut health fixes every other bad thing wrong with you when it's right

But when water is sold and it has chemicals petroleum pesticides all kinds of things in it that is bad for us

For years now people have become aware of staying hydrated and water vs. sugary soda's is better for us, and they know that our bodies need to stay hydrated so they can charge us because it's a necessity.

Depends where you are in the world,
Developer countries mostly have drinkable water station all around the city, and you can have tap water at any place no questions asked.
Therefore these countries will have much expensive waters ( coming from Springs, filtered and etc)
+ Water with minerals the process of adding those minerals. Transport cost from the springs to you.
Which is why it's expensive.
If you go to developing countries, like India, Pakistan, Thailand, Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia. Over there water is much cheaper to clean and process + they don't brand it like natural springs water.

There are fixed costs. The poor schmuck who is most willing to pay has to pay and bottled water drinkers are said schmucks, is my best guess.
