Bullies make you strong. I was bullied. It was then I learned, I have a tough side. I have no fear to altercations, and I fight hard. All bullies quit bullying after me. The became good kids after.
Agree. I was made stronger through it as well.
Yea I know exactly how you feel.
What's with the generic anime character?
Words can't hurt
They can. Don't give that petty crap.
@MaisGem21 hmm, never even had my skin bruised by them before. Criticism makes you stronger.
Once heard the quote "sticks and stones will break my bones but words will absolutly shatter me."
Words can drive people to commit suicide or self-harm, which I think you cam see is "hurt" as well as making someone think they're broken, disgusting, or stupid
They very much can. It honestly dosent take more than an sentence to destroy any individual really. Can cause far more damage than any simple physical pains.
@Tanuron skin wounds heal, emotional wounds often do not
@FallOutBoy2001
They can't do any damage if you don't let them.
"Words can't hurt you if you don't let them" -- not that simple. I can easily ignore a hurtful comment if it's from one person. Not so much if it's a whole group of people saying hurtful things.
To the comment that criticism makes you stronger, it does if it's said in a civil way. Like when a manager tells an employee they didn't do something right.
Criticism over something you can't change (appearance, skin colour, disability) is plain horrible so explain how that makes you stronger when you are told you are not good enough by societies standards.
Saying that words can't hurt is very insensitive of you.
Thanks for backing me up guys! @FallOutBoy2001 @Tanuron
@MaisGem21 if you're being sorrounded by a group of people and accosted, I'd suggest a new daily routine. You can fix just about anything you don't like in yourself, or that people don't like about you.
No sense feeling sorry for yourselves, people. Western life is pretty good.
If a mother looks at her daughter and calls her a worthless piece of crap and walks away... I'd imagine the daughter would be devastated. And it wouldn't matter if she moved out. She would still be scarred for years. Words can definitely hurt
Because you can *totally* fix sexuality or race
@FallOutBoy2001
Cause people in the real world *totally* get sorrounded and bullied for that daily.
@rjroy3
If a mother is doing that to her child she's probably done a lot worse over the years - a mothers feelings toward her daughter a much more meaningful than any words she says, and why the hell are you using random hypotheticals?
So, we are enjoying our straight, white male privilege, aren't we? Where do you live? Do you not see homophobic slurs, ever?
@FallOutBoy2001
Right, my argument is invalid because of my skin color, gender and sexual orientation - only a fool picks on ethos to win an argument. Maybe you need to check your babysitter privilege. Because you talk like someone who is miserable in their own life, yet you have no experience outside of high school, thus you're an expert in everything.
Slurs are way different than bullying that you're describing. Slurs can't hurt. Words can't hurt. Calling someone a faggot doesn't hurt their feelings, it just makes the person using it look like an asshole.
No I haven't ever seen anyone bullied because of race or sexual orientation. Bullying in its glorified sense only happens when fifteen-year-old babysitters whose daddies are paying for nursing school says it's happening on Tumblr. Everyone else learns to take flack without bitching and moaning. There, I picked on ethos, which is apparently how you argue.
Here's the thing, I'm not accusing your argument of being invalid, but you haven't been bullied for sexuality, and I can tell you off the bat, it makes you feel like crap when people call you faggot, dyke, or any other slur, especially if it's true. If people say "If I ever saw a faggot/dyke/queer, I'd beat them up." or "Faggots are freaks!" "Queers are dangerous/unnatural" you're going to internalize those things, especially if they're coming from peers. Many high-schoolers don't know much beyond their own high school, and don't always know if its going to end. Being told you're ugly/fat/stupid/useless, every single day can eventually make you think everyone else is right.
By the way, I am not qualified, DO NOT let me babysit your kids. Bad idea, there's a reason I'm not doing that right now. Telescopes and computers, much more up my alley.
""They can't do any damage if you don't let them" Not alwats so simple and easy, you kinda have to become a robot to stay true to that one, I would know even, something I been called a lot. But words obviously can hurt, and is a little bit ironic I have to point out how emotional you get about this from reading ur replies. Do you let this topic effect you with others words?, why do you let what anyone else say effect you? Regardless again though, words obviously can hurt, why everyone build walls and wear masks to protect themselves. You can train all your life to become a badass martial artist, too even, but naturally that dosent mean anyone can't hurt you physical either.
@Tanuron
My annoyance with the fact that I even need to have this argument has nothing to do with anyone here. It's as impersonal as a blind liaison.
No one has even insulted me, so I'm not affected by what you say.
I'm not saying words aren't powerful or important - I'm saying they don't hurt.
Nothing wrong with my daily routine @ColinHarvey but the fact that you have suggested to change myself to become acceptable by societies standards show you are incompetent to understand feelings outside your own and think a simple change to my routine is necessary?
I'm not going to change myself just because some ignorant lad on the internet told me so.
Sorry my emotions and opinions is such an inconvenience to you. It's the internet, get used to it and it's not just my opinion either, facts, research and personal experience shows that words CAN hurt.
There have been several stories on people who take their own lives due to being bullied and emotionally abused. You must be completely deaf if you think words can't hurt you - probably because you can't hear them. But as @Tanuron pointed out, the fact you are replying shows this post does bother you. Not exactly as thick-skinned as you make yourself out to be.
I suggest reading this article: www.psychologytoday.com/.../why-words-can-hurt-least-much-sticks-and-stones
Maybe it educate you.
@MaisGem21
You should adapt yourself to fit society's standards, you wouldn't want people to categorize you as a degenerate. That could lead to bullying.
Thanks for explaining what deaf means. Yeah you're right, I'm just sobbing I'm so worked up about what you all think of me. I'm covered in bruises from your fiery rhetoric.
A lot of people got bullied, nobody died, get back to your kids, Mr. Johnson will be home in an hour and if you don't clean up that Mac & cheese from earlier they'll never ask you to babysit again.
Why don't you just read the article she provided and not accuse two people older than you, and me, who's younger, of not understanding how the world works, and maybe learn that people shouldn't have to change to be acceptable to societies standards and maybe society can become more tolerant
Only people I know who have said that words dont hurt have all been bullies, the irony being they have always been more fragile and fearful than I have ever been. Been a coping mechanism for them, they like to pretend all the crap they did cause they were ruled by fear didn't do any permament damage but in reality they believe it did, but just dont want to accept it. Only way they know how to cope with their own sad reality, which is pretty pathetic really, but whatever gets them through the day.
Either way, since criticism makes you stronger. I think you have a very illogical reasoning. Saying words can't hurt and that they only hurt cause u let them. Its no different than say if I was to just walk over to you and beat you senseless, I can excuse it as that you are not as trained in martial arts as I am. Its your own fault, letting yourself get beaten up by me, its your own fault that you haven't practiced martial arts since u were 5 years old. Do this excuse work for you?
Can I just blame you for being weaker and less skilled in martial arts (since yes I actually practiced since I was 6years old) . Like I could basically walk around and beat up anyone cause they were weaker than me. Sure you can train a mind like you train a body, part of martial arts training that as well. But it dosent give me an excuse to take advantage of someone weaker then me. Nor more weak minded. Its in either case, certainly no more simpler to protect yourself from words than it would be from any physical damage. It would always be someone out there who could defeat you, combat wise and mind wise too. There is no absolute answer to proect yourself, other than maybe bury yourself down in an basement or something and never deal with the world or people ever, lol. In either case, I think rather wanna be bullied also, than follow the sheep herd of society. You never become happy if u have to try and please everyone, but more importantly, dont live in fear anyway.
@FallOutBoy2001
These two people that are older than me still use the term "bully." I did read the article, says people kill themselves. You can thank the self-esteem movement for that.
@Tanuron
Are you done with your tantrum? Do you have anything to defend your position or are you just going to plug your martial arts abilities?
Because bully is a word, and a very descriptive word. Clearly, you've never been bullied before, and I'm tempted to agree with Tanuron that you probably were/are a bully, seeing as you deny words hurt at all, when clearly they do
lolz. No tantrum mate :). But I can see you got nothing. More irony "Do you have anything to defend your position" Says the person who bring nothing to the table and have nothing to defend his position. Man, you are like the definition of irony.
@FallOutBoy2001
"Bully" is the word a six year old girl uses to describe a boy that has a crush on her.
I was bullied through middle school. None of that pussy shit with words. Like, beaten up, daily. It builds character. But, again if all you're going to do Is rely on my ethos there's no sense in arguing, you're just out of things to say.
I was in physical fights myself pretty much everyday at school. Saying it build characters dosent excuse it away, nor what happen to you naturally. I dont remember honestly much of any of the fights anymore, was too many, I dont feel like anything physical really affected me at all. While was worse at home, more fighting there too. But from reflecting on it for years, im pretty sure I harmed all the bullies way more than they ever hurt me. I made them all cry, and I did it with words. The physical fights was just bruises that healed. I can tell too from several years later that cause I fought back so hard (both physical and verbally) but it was my verbal fight that changed their characters, cause I stung them so deep. I know we live in an age were many people may dramatize many things. But I can totally get how it is to be in fights everyday, to be bullied both physical and mentally.
@Tanuron
Right, so you understand that words can't hurt.
And you all accused me of bullying? Pff.
Not listening? But I can get it, this is all too close to you for now. I give it 10 years. And you will do a complete 180 on this.
But yeah fair warning, dont become like the ones who hurt you physical. You adapted one of their core believes. You are better than that. Just yeah, dont become what you hate. You sound dangerously close already.
@Tanuron
I don't hate anyone. I'm glad I got bullied, made me who I am. Words can't hurt, end of story.
If in ten years, I'm a self-centered prognosticator of unadulterated existentialism who wants a world wide safe space and an end to bullying, I'll hang myself so that I can be an even bigger liability on society.
Shame is good, keeps us in line.
I see. Sorry you lost yourself along the way. Cause by sound of it, you want to become like these "bullies". Thats probably why you become similiar to them too. A person who lives their life in denial and fear aren't someone to be proud of. But whatever helps you sleep really, cause if you didn't, I bet you would actually hang yourself. Just a shame you allowed yourself to bend over and join them. While im glad in many ways I got bullied myself, I certainly never became that ignorant to think words dont hurt, thats the mindset again of a bully. Thats why again so many resort to violence cause they want to hurt. And think words dont hurt or hurt enough so they turn physical. How many of them "resolve" things.
Words obviously hurt, end of story.
@Tanuron
Why do you keep picking on my character? You don't know me, you're just making generalizations based on what you think I would sound like in speech. Who cares what my life is like? You're trying to take the moral high ground, like you're Jesus every time you reply.
hahaha
certain things are pretty obvious ill admit. But time will explain everything anyway, so know its pointless of me to say anything really. But thanks for that one though :)
I believe the terms I used were "asshole" and "prick" because he was just that, but I realize that's atypical. I understand you were physically beaten up, but that doesn't mean other forms of bullying aren't real bullying, it just means that they're other forms of bullying
@FallOutBoy2001
Yeah what's up with that. All I said was "babysitter," and I got ragged on. Turned out not even to be true. Hmm.
But I ain't even bothered.
@Tanuron
Where are you from? I read through your previous messages a few times, it was a bit like decoding a German enigma, you just kinda ramble on about random shit. Think I got the just of most of it. If you have a Community College in your area, I'd suggest taking English 78, it would really benefit your writing style, and move you to the next level.
And you ran out of your arguments and just retorted to misunderstanding what I wrote and telling the other guy to learn better English, which is very easy to understand
Sorry about that, I made the mistake to think you actually had a brain. Wow generic 101. Wanna add some yo mama jokes while at it? You are just sad dude, This scream desperation so much its not even funny.. *I has no intelligent to say or intelligent comeback.. oh I got it!!. Better make fun of their english!*.
@FallOutBoy2001 Already proven in that sense then that you are much more intelligent than him :). So thank you for having a brain :)
@FallOutBoy2001
I mean, you guys just aren't giving me anything to work with here you're just sort of running a character analysis, but you're dumb, so you're not very good at it.
@Tanuron
Look, Kung Fu Panda, I thought you were foreign, okay? I messed up!
At the end of the day, insults from strangers and acquaintances can't hurt. I can't even remember the last insult from someone I barely knew. What sticks is criticism from loved ones, because words have power when they come from someone you value.
You don't need to please everyone - just don't be a degenerate and you will avoid being accosted. Not that it should bug you anyways.
I assure you I may be a lot of things, but dumb isn't one of them. At least not according to test scores.
@FallOutBoy2001
Hang on, let me wait for a reply from Jackie Chan.
His response will probably give me more to work with...
@ColinHarvey
*slow clap applause* Oh wow you have me completely nailed to a tee there... I mean I studied hard for my law degree and currently a law assistant but yea part time babysitting is the shit I live for.
May I suggest offering you some advice: don't comment on things you don't know anything about. You've proved yourself to be completely clueless in this post about emotions and have the lack of ability to see the world as it is. I suggest taking classes of psychology too.
@FallOutBoy2001 @Tanturon
You aren't completely wrong that bullies like to deny that human emotions actually exist. Makes it easier for them to live with the guilt of fucking up someones life.
From what I've seen Colin, you're the only one throwing the insults around here, we are handing you stone hard facts and you are being completely ignorant to it.
Tell me to change all you want, it's not going to happen.
Change your attitude dude. Then people might actually like you.
@MaisGem21 yeah, you're working to get a degree in law and are currently a law assistant, I'm over here trying to land an internship with NASA or at one of the big partical accelerators out west, but yeah, babysitting is what we live for.
@FallOutBoy2001
Right, I thought it was a pretty good one liner.
Thanks for that background on your lives, guys, that makes all the difference in your argument. I mean I'm not claiming to be any expert, I'm just saying, you'd be a lot happier letting things go, because you'll never end "bullying," bad language, and scorning. People are going to say whatever they want - it's scary if anything that someone in law would get so worked up about Internet baiting. Makes me wonder what laws may look like in twenty years or so.
I'm not scared for the future of law, as if @MaisGem21 is any indication, they are going to be a lot more open minded and the field should be diversified, and that seems like a change for the better.
let me see your face
