Girls do this shit because they don't want to deal with the unpleasantness of being straight up with you. So they kindly pass that off to you so that it hurts twice as much for you and they don't have to bother with it.

Agreed I'd MUCH prefer to know. That said this tactic wouldn't work on a lot of guys.
Simply tell them.. one rejection won't be the end of them.
No I wouldn't always do that... some guys cannot take rejection well and may engage in harassing behaviour
