Tomboy as a term is overused by people who don't know the meaning of that word.
That's just one of the main reasons why the Tomboy meaning is mostly diluted.
People often mistake a Butch for a Tomboy, but that's not the same term: Tomboy vs Butch - Differences
Generally speaking, tomboyish girls are an energetic, sometimes boisterous type of girls, whose behavior and pursuits, especially in games and sports, are considered more typical of boys than of girls.
Some girls think they are "tomboys", for number of false reasons, because they don't know what the word tomboy actually means.
So they invent things like:
"I'm a nerdy tomboy" (there is no such a thing) - being a tomboy is quite the opposite in most personality traits, compared to a nerd.
Tomboy can be a gamer, but not a nerd.- "I'm a lazy tomboy" (nope, that's not it) - Tomboys are actually quite active and energetic.
- "I wear pants/I have short hair = I'm a tomboy" (even girly girls sometimes wear pants, and most tomboys actually don't have short hair) - Wearing just certain type of clothes, or having specific haircut doesn't make you a tomboy - Being a tomboy is about the attitude.
Here are some of the key differences between real tomboys, and fake tomboys:
- True Tomboy: Energetic, sporty, competitive
- Fake “Tomboy”: Wears baggy hoodie, calls herself “low-maintenance”
- True Tomboy: Plays rough, climbs trees, beats boys at wrestling
- Fake "Tomboy": Short hair, no makeup, thinks that's = tomboy
- True Tomboy: Wears fitted athletic wear, crop tops, ripped jeans
- Fake "Tomboy": Wears oversized men’s tees to hide body
- True Tomboy: Attractive, confident, active
- Fake "Tomboy": Often using word “tomboy” as cope for her own laziness or insecurity
So, when you realize that 60% of women who say they are “tomboy” don’t play sports - you know that self-labeling has no realistic point.
It's easy to know the difference between a tomboy and a girly girl, but can you distinct a real tomboy from a fake tomboy?
