They do that because there are a whole bunch of guys who claim "UGH I DON'T WANT TO DATE A GRRL IWTH HAIR ON HER LEGS THAT IS SO UNFEEMININE AND DEESGUSNTINGN NYUHRKJASNKJRNA" and then considering they're the loudest of the bunch, many females assume it is a necessity in order to be liked. That, and in high school, everyone gives you a whole bunch of shit for having unshaven legs, so it's pretty much all about peer pressure. Those who think that legs MUST BE SHAVED will force those who aren't shaving it to do so because otherwise they'd feel like their efforts were in vain. They get reassurance by persuading others into following the same stupid crap as they do. Technically, it's like religion. Pretty much the same mechanics.

That, and females are pretty much conditioned to believe that physical appearance is the only thing that matters. The problem is, that many guys are conditioned to suppress their emotions, disable their empathy, and actually will start looking for "A GIRLFRIEND" not someone to establish a relationship with but "a girlfriend" who could be anyone as long as they "look okay and are presentable and want sex", so basically the common population will end up actually adhering to this physical appearance-based assessment in which males basically treat females as live good-looking sex toys that you're meant to conquer. This is our current culture! Wonderful, right?

Anyways, if you want more info on why people obsess so much about appearance, watch KILLING US SOFTLY 4. People don't learn to value their natural beauty, and accept themselves as they are. But it seems to me that the general male population seems to have forgotten how to do that as well.

If you were to graph a line displaying the volume of appearance questions asked by the girl's age, you'd notice a spike the size of the dotcom bubble between ages 14-18. After that, they appear less and less as age increases. Why does this happen? There are two arguments, one being tied to biological and sociological factors where a teenager is entering the early stages of adulthood and must learn of where they stand in society. An identity is being forged, and this is the birth of self-awareness. (Note, it is entirely possible that environmental factors as well as genetic factors can hinder this process resulting in older men/women seeking the same approval).

The day grandma asks a "Rate Me" question (assuming she's on the internet) is the day Hell freezes over.

The other argument is that men and women never really get over this phase and they somehow find love and develop self awareness in other ways and therefore have no need to ask these questions as they get older.

If the media is really responsible then these insecurities would remain consistent throughout our entire lives because the media doesn't go away. There would be no spike followed by a dip. It has to be in our nature and a mechanism for developing identity.

My mother raised me to care the most about my personality and who I am on the inside. I'm thankful for that. Don't get me wrong, I try to pick out clothes that are good for my body type and fit me well and I take good care of my hair and all that but looking good isn't my top priority. I'm not trying to say that all fashionable or feminine girls are superficial. You can be very feminine and look great without being too caught up in your looks. I just think that when it gets to the point where you're, more often than not, conscious about how you look, it's going too far.

Physical appearance has it's place but it certainly isn't high on my priority list. I'll work on what I can by staying fit and active, wearing clothes that fit well, and taking care of my hair, but there are better things to do with my time than always care about how I look.

Women are judged on their appearance WAY more than men are. By the media, by other women, by friends and family, by men they want to date, by society in general, etc. Men don't really have a standard of beauty to meet to look good. Hairy legs don't look good on women, trust me, I have hairy ass legs that nobody wants to see. So I get rid of the hair.

I condition my hair once or twice a week because it's dry, not because I think that's what I should be doing. I don't wear high heels a whole lot because I have flat feet and I'm already 6'1". With everything else though, makeup and all of that, I think less is more. Some women wear way too much and that's what distorts the perceived standard of beauty. There is too much makeup, air brushing, and photoshopping done in advertisements and TV/movies as well, and that affects how women perceive themselves as well.

So a lot of women care a lot, but not all do. I really don't. As long as I don't look like I just rolled out of bed, I'm pretty good to go.

But yes I agree with you in general. Though in case it's not clear girls do that because they think men care about that only or at least mostly when looking for a partner. If it annoys send girls you know the message that you value them for other things than her body. It's not only men, it's also to big parts the media. But if you've ever been to the comment section of pictures or videos of hot girls and then in comparison to those of women who are not as perfect, you know that men do their fair share in shaking girls self esteem

Oh hell yeah, women nowadays are actually lost with how they are supposed to look and feel...

Blame the media, blame the image and the propaganda of what a woman is supposed to actually look like - every woman that gets dressed to go out never does it for herself anymore but rather for the guy or to look better than the other woman - why? I do not know, seriously though why are women in competition with one another?

Women by nature, no matter how much they deny are ALL INSECURE so what does she have to do in order to not show her flaws or insecurity - play the part, either look like a skeleton - the way the media portrays a woman to be or pound on a ton of makeup to not show how she really looks - you will be surprised as to how a woman really looks underneath all that makeup - I am not going to lie, I love makeup but do I wear it everyday - hell no, its not for me - not even an eyeliner...

Let's not forget the clothes and the heels - do not even get me started how some women would rather go through pain then coming out of the house with comfort, I love heels but not 12 inch heels - 6 is the most I go up and even that hurts my feet if I wear them for too long.

You also have to consider the reason why women care about appearance, ask yourself would you go out with a girl that looks like she just changed to work in a barn? Probably not. Some women really do it for the guys, so guys could notice them, so guys would still consider them sexy when she is not wearing all that crap - believe me you are to blame at some point, sure hygiene matters but that goes for everybody but some guys expect the best - a trophy...

Which is why some girls ask their boyfriends or husband or lover "Am I Beautiful?" To guys, its annoying when she constantly asks you that but to us - we seriously feel like there is a competition because the moment I will not look the part, you will look at another girl so what do you want us to do? You know this question is kind of funny, cause when it comes to dating women seem to care less about their partners appearance then men do.
But when it comes to their own appearance it's a totally different story.

I think that it's not appearances per say that we care about, it's about ritual and self confidence. When i put time into my appearance, like spending 2 hours getting ready for an evening out, it's a ritual for me. It's fun and enjoyable. And the feeling of having smooth skin or soft hair (after shaving or using a conditioning treatment) is incredible. I feel different, better... probably because most beauty products smell amazing.

This is probably just me, not all women are like this of course. But heels, yes they can hurt and feel uncomfortable at times but they are just so pretty and in them my posture is better, and i feel taller and more confident. Again, it may just be me, but my appearance is closely related to how i feel. There's that saying: In the right heels, i can conquer the world.

I'm a 14 year old girl obvious I shave and was my hair and things that are to do with general healthy, but I don't like wearing makeup or getting dressed up i'm perfectly fine with a band t-shirt, jeans and vans. Not all girls are like that though.. I never shave my legs, i got light hair so its not very noticable and I dont care enough lol. Even guys shave armpits so you won't sweat as much and the skin gets irritated. I never wear high heels, dont really feel like falling every 5 minutes and break something. I can't remember ever really liking myself appearance wise except for maybe that once in a blue moon when I am in a killer outfit. Like even as an elementary student I didn't like myself. I know that I care too much. I have known that for years but that doesn't help my situation. I don't really know what caused me to hate myself. Like I don't think it was media although as a teen girl it doesn't help. Although my boyfriend likes me completely natural. Ordinarily I would say to blame the media, but then I thought about it a little more and realized that if girls just didn't care about the media and being judged just like the try to be (independent in her thoughts and actions). I feel as tho if girls were to just block out the media, or just filter it for trends that they actually like, they would be much happier with their lives in general. I think women tend to focus on beauty more because if you look back in history, there weren't many ways for a woman to be successful other than marrying a rich man. For a rich man to want you, you'd have to be beautiful. Men tend to focus in success more because in order for a beautiful girl to want you, you had to be rich. Subconsciously, I believe that mentality of beauty and success has stuck with us for a very long time. Also, beauty has more value in a woman than a man. A woman can be as successful as Bill Gates, and people would still try to pick out her one physical flaw and make fun of it forever. In general, yes. There are things women do to enhance their appearance that genuinely do look very good, and I appreciate the effort, but some things to me are quite unnecessary. High heels seem dangerous to walk in, getting an artificial tan is not necessary, and women don't need to put in so much effort for their hair I'm sure. (friend in college revealed she hadn't showered in 3 days one time, and she looked perfectly fine) They aren't a replacement for good conversation skills or friendliness.

To be completely honest, though, it would be hard for me to feel sexually attracted to hairy legs. It may technically be a culture-based thing to like shaven legs, but it also makes sense why they are sexually interesting to men. We like flesh and curves.

Yes, they care way too much about physical appearance, their own and that of the guys they are interested in. They care way more about looks than men. There is nothing wrong with looking good or wanting a good looking partner, but when you have body image issues, blow large portions of your income on clothing, makeup, hand bags, etc, can't leave the house without a little make up, spend hour (s) getting ready, idealize/aspire to be like some famous person because you think they are pretty, try to change the way your man dresses, become obsess with a guy that you haven't even got to know just because he's hot, try to attract that guy by wearing a new outfit or getting your hair done, etc. then it becomes pretty sad. yes! I care a lot and I still feel there's more I need to do, bc there's probably hundreds of things I feel like needs to be done just to look good. For me, it's mandatory to do some things. I won't leave the house unless I'm showered, dressed in clean decent clothes, teeth brushed, and at least cover up on my face. What is it with you and women conditioning their hair? How you carry yourself usually shows how much you care about yourself. If you're trying to get a job and smell, or have horrible hair, the chances of you getting that job goes down. I shave my legs because hairy legs don't feel nice againts soft blankets, and i feel gross with them all hairy. I wear makeup to make myself feel more confident, lipstick goes under makeup, sweetie... Moral of the story, it's pretty much just hygiene.

I wanted to say yes initially but the perks of being a pretty girl are drastically better than a person who is not considered all around beautiful/pretty/gorgeous, and I think there's a need for adoration present in most young ladies and it sort of goes into physical adoration?

Yes! But think about for a second why. If we dont look like sexy hotties, no guy wants us.  We need to be in shape and thin, but have big butt and boobs. We should wear make up or we are ugly, but not too much. We should look good and attractive and dress so that our figure shows, but still not look slutty.  And that is just a small part of things we "should" do. Also often if we refuse to do some things we are "lazy" or "feminazis"

Girls spend HOURS a day getting ready to look their best for that day and the days to come. Anyone can improve their looks greatly with the time and some money so spend an hour a day to improve yourself

Lol I like how you mentioned conditioning hair as a ridiculous beauty treatment. If you have hair past your ears, you HAVE to condition it for it to be manageable.  And just remember WHY girls torture themselves.
