If they had short hair and were wearing a suit and pants, I don't think you would be able to tell they're female.
But then, why do women think that this is what males consider the ideal body type? Or is this really the ideal body type?

I'm studying a history related degree at the moment, and it seems like throughout history, the curvy, feminine figure above has always been the more desired look, as it was a sign of health, wealth and status if a woman could eat well enough to be curvy. Also, wider hips have always been desirable for the purpose of childbearing. It is only a recent thing that a narrow, more masculine figure has been perceived as desirable.
I find it interesting and kinda sad now how I've heard lots of my friends and family feel insecure about having wide hips and such, or not getting down to a certain dress size, because to me, 'normal' has always been having a feminine figure.
I think that many women/ girls feel pressured from the media to look like the average model, sometimes because it gives them confidence in their own appearance and how others perceive them. For example, the other day when I was shopping online, it dawned on me how feminine and normal the "plus size models" looked - they represent a majority of women in western society (and many others), in terms of feminine body proportions, and yet the clothing they model is marketed as "plus".
I don't come under the 'plus' category, but even in the regular clothing range I've noticed that it is designed for women with a less curvy figure. For example, many girls I know are a clothing size bigger on the bottom, because the measurements for the standardised sizes don't take into account the feminine figure. It was only the other day, that I bought a skirt in size small (that claimed to be size 8-10) that would have fit my waist perfectly. Unfortunately, the zip broke whilst putting it on, because it was tight to pull up past my bum.
From a young age, I always wanted to be curvy, rather than straight down like the Victoria Secret models, because to me, I'd always seen being curvy as a sign of being feminine. By that I mean having wide hips and proportionate breasts and stuff.
In fact, I was insecure about that as a teenager, because apart from a round bottom and average chest, I was very straight down at the sides with broad shoulders, a small waist and small hips, and in my head, I thought that I looked masculine as a result of it. I used to wear belts at the waist to try and give the illusion of some definition. It wasn't until I was in my late teens that people (mainly female family and friends) started complimenting and stuff, saying that I had become quite curvy, and that I had the hourglass shape.
"But then, why do women think that this is what males consider the ideal body type?" They don't. This is just what SOME women think is the ideal body type. Not because it's "what men think" but because it's what THEY think. Why does everything always have to be about what men think? Can't women think independently or should all our actions and thoughts be based on what men think and do? I also think it's hypocritical of you to be so against gender roles, yet you have no problem with deciding what's "feminine" and what isn't. So now I look like a man just because I don't have fat thighs and big boobs? People come in all shapes and sizes, no matter how cliché that sounds, and for you to sit there and act as if you get to decide who looks "like a man/woman" and who doesn't is not only arrogant, but also downright disgusting. It assumes that there's actually a specific way a person SHOULD look, because otherwise they don't fit your stereotypical standards and therefore are not normal. Guess what, I'm a fucking woman and I barely have boobs and my legs look like sticks. Guess what, there are men out there who are on the curvy side but they're still men. Maybe you should stop trying to impose these standards onto people because right now, YOU'RE the one putting people into boxes, in exactly the same way as those who impose gender roles on others. Why is it so important to you to point out if someone looks "manly" or "feminine"? What do you gain from it? Who does it help? Why do you think this is right, but gender roles are wrong?

The context in which I always hear about VS models here is "why do guys say they love women with curves and then drool over VS models". It's quite clear that the only reason why VS models are seen as an "ideal" is due to the assumption that that is what makes generally find attractive. While I cannot speak for all males, only the ones I have talked to about this and myself; they typically don't find these girls attractive whatsoever. So claiming that we drool for these girls is somewhat baffling. It also shows that the belief that we do do that is harmful, considering women typically don't look like this unless they starve themselves. There are models who have died before from maintaining this look, malnutrition and starvation.
A clear difference to gender roles is that the ability to judge physical attractiveness is a biologically inherent trait. While saying that men should know how to do plumbing or fix cars and that women look more feminine if they wear high heels is arbitrary.
@RachelBrigs if there is any hypocrisy here, it's that I used the term "feminine" to describe their appearance. I was a bit wary of it, but I figured it would bring more attention to the topic than if I just used the term "attractive". Most people do seem to link what I find attractive with the term "feminine", after all.
Of course, for me, it has nothing to do with actually being feminine, it's just what I perceive to be good looking and what facilitates sexual attraction.

@RachelBrigs well for me to find them attractive, yes! For many other people, to find them attractive, yes! Obviously I am not the global standard for what is attractive as in what I declare to find attractive obviously isn't universal, but many people seem to generally agree that the standard for what is attractive is typically NOT these "overly thin VS models, because they don't look like women". Not my words, as I don't like saying that, I personally just find them generally unattractive and unappealing based on their body shape, those are my words that essentially mean the same thing.
It's fine though, women tend to find these girls thinspirational. Hopefully that will drive people to be healthier, instead of low self-esteem and eating disorders.
@RachelBrigs Ah, those aren't really my words. I personally don't like subscribing to the idea of being more "manly" or "womanly", what matters to me is whether they are attractive or not. If you have functional ovaries and a vagina, you're a woman no matter what you look like; but that doesn't mean you're attractive to every male if any. Certain shapes are attributed greater measure of attractiveness. Of course, you may ask, "who cares if guys find you attractive", but as a heterosexual person, isn't that one of the most important aspects of appearance - whether the members of the other sex find you attractive?

In that case, I'll have to admit that yes, if they are that thin, then I don't and cannot find them attractive as females, from my perspective as a heterosexual male. Of course, that still doesn't mean they aren't women (they have functional ovaries and a vagina, no?), but they could still pass as men if you remove the other "traditionally feminine" qualities (their clothing and their long hair).
And no, physical appearance and inherent body shape are very different from prescribed interests and behavior; things like how women ought to "naturally" be "obedient" towards their husband, shouldn't work, and that they typically suck at math. (Or that apparently I like cars.. I don't)
Just because your behavior in my eyes is not a direct consequence of your sex, that doesn't mean you cannot be judged based on your physical appearance, which IS the ONLY actual direct by-product of your physical sex.

I guess the main difference is that you can't really change the core of how you react which in turn defines how you behave (unless you change your beliefs, which is something completely different), but you can quite easily change the way you look. What's defined as "culturally appropriate to wear in a given context" is a complicated matter.

You can change the core of how you react. It's called critical thinking. I see this on that Humans of New York page all the time. Brandon usually never specifies who's talking when there is more than one person in the picture, but for the most part it's something you figure out as you read. And when someone who has been photographed is, for example, talking about the struggles of being a doctor, they assume it's the man talking (if there's both a man and a woman). More than once it has turned out that it was the woman who was the doctor, and lots of people keep complaining in the comments about how horrible they feel for jumping to conclusions and assuming it was the man who's the doctor. This line of thinking can easily be gotten rid of if you're more critical, more self-aware, and if you actually TRY to find stuff out BEFORE passing judgment or making a decision.
Well I mean, the whole reason guys think you consider this OUR ideal is because that's what we keep hearing.

@OpenClose I've literally never heard of men being blamed for women's eating disorders. Usually women are the ones inciting each other, creating these standards by competing among each other, frequently following tags, or tagging things as "thinspo" or "fitspo" etc. Bragging about latest diets, how much they run, work out and how little/healthy they try to eat. It becomes a competition of who can eat the least and work out the most. Not a competition of who can impress/attract the most guys. Some girls might complain about guys thinking VS models is the ideal but from what I can tell, most girls idolize these models not because "it's what men want", but because it's literally what these women think is attractive. What THEY think that THEY themselves want. Because THEY see it as beautiful.

I'm not here to tell you you are wrong about what motivates girls. I think it's good that they aren't just doing it for guys, and I think we need to do a better job of presenting it as such.
But what I am doing here is telling you what us guys see. And basically, we are told we are shallow shits if we like girls to be thinner, or if thicker girls aren't our ideal. You might not be able to recall a single incident, but I was actually in a gender rights group and heard "Guys like you are the reason girls starve themselves!"

Can these guys even be considered masculine? I think they look feminine. They could pass as females. Look at them, soft flabby bodies, curvy like a woman, fat in their chest looks like female breasts instead of a manly chest. Can a man even be considered a man if he's shorter that he average woman?
The problem is that men and women are physically different. Men have a lot less body-fat than women by default thus looking soft and flabby is a result of them letting themselves really go while a normally fit woman will still have quite a lot body fat.

I simply was pointing out that women by nature have more body-fat and thus it is NORMAL for them to have visible body-fat. Hence breasts themselves are pretty much pure fat. The butt as well (ask any masseuse who does full-body massages how sensitive guys butts are because they don't have said fat there). And so on and so forth.

I really do see your point... The body of many super models were never really attractive to me. I remember watching a documentary which was saying that modelling agency select their models who look like "adolescent males". This could explain why thin female models in Victoria Secret don't really look feminine. The only other thing to note is that their faces are generally considered to be extremely beautiful which could make up for their unfeminine bodies. To be honest, I don't find their faces all that but the general consensus sees them that way.

They're tall slim and not overtly curvaceous, but they're women and they look like women. They don't have broad shoulders. They have defined waists. Small breasts are still breasts. They have long girly legs. You don't need to be a perfect hourglass to be a woman or to look like one. Women come in different sizes and shapes. Just like men. Just like everything in existence.

The super skinny soft looking guy in my post isn't a normal guy in his natural state tho by the way. In your natural state without working out, you will indeed have less muscle mass than the guys we got pictures of. I also cannot blame women for preferring that look; if anything, this makes me realize I should start working out to look less silly, lol.
The strange part about "wanting a bigger guy" is when they claim that the guy has to "be taller" but any guy with any bigger height is taller than them, but when the girl is like "oh he has to be 10" taller" is just extreme.

i agree with you, i mean to call Adriana lima a man, i would question the guy's sanity. I find many of the vs models attractive. I don't associate femininity with shortness or thickness. I actually prefer girls on the thin side and i found the girl that he found pretty to be kinda chubby in my opinion. I've dated taller women and all of them were just as cute and feminine as a short girl.
This is not about VS in particular, but most people don't understand why runway models are so thin.

Now that we got that out of the way...
Runway models are chosen so that, as much as possible, the models are "background" and the clothes are "foreground". It's not just the body; it's also the face. Runway models' faces have those distinctly un-striking faces, jawlines and so on.
As a contrast, think of, say, Jennifer Lopez. J-Lo would be the worst runway model ever, because people would not focus on the clothes. They would focus on the ba-donkadonk. You see my point.
VS is not haute couture, so VS models are not "walking hangers" in the same way. But, still, VS models are NOT intended to be "sexy" to MEN. They are "sexy" in a playful sort of way that women understand, but that men don't.
Like, go to the VS website right now, and click "PINK" in the top left corner. You'll see a pic of 3 girls playing around in their skimpies. This embodies what I'm talking about. It is TOTALLY not sexually-sexy. Which makes it simultaneously inviting and "unthreatening" to women. As though the models would be cool girlfriends who would party with you, and who wouldn't steal your man.

I prefer lean body not filled with soft curves. i like my body to feel hard straightforward strong direct planted and focused like an arrow, not all wavy and squishy and random so you can't really feel physically connected. if thats masculine then i prefer looking masculine. 100%
the bodies dont look great or horrible but i definitely prefer it to 'round'. muscle is not just aesthetic its serves a purpose. too many women are just not using their muscle potential sand staying soft and ineffectual relative to how they could be. its not like we migrated 1000s of miles by being soft and demure.. womens bodies are naturally primed for better stuff than advertising indicates. it really doesn't matter if men dont find strong efficient bodies attractive. its absurd to live your health based on a persons sexual fetish.
if women and men both exercised and did strength raining everyone woo;ld be quote muscular. there would not be the disparity represented in images shown as a guy who works out vs a woman who does not. I think like you said its something society shapes. I think fashion shows are more for women than men because women compare themselves to other women for justification. Most women's goal is to outdo the other woman, not get man she wants. For some, getting the man is just part of outdoing another woman.
I had a human development teacher in college tell me once, "What do men look at most when at the beach? Women. And what do women look at most when at the beach. Other women." That's why women may think an outfit or hair cut is so cute, and buy it just because she will get praise from her girlfriends, while guys think it just looks crazy. That's why fashion industry and diet industries and magazines can make so much money off of women because they understand that. Because many women find justification through other women, so I believe. I bet if women focused on impressing a man, instead of outdoing each other, the fashion magazines and expensive clothing lines, and diet companies would loose business.
I think people should embrace all body types instead of condemning one that doesn't suit their particular taste.
If a woman has a little more... I don't see her as more of a woman. If a woman has a little less... I don't see her as less of a woman. A woman is defined by the attributes she has to bring to the table. If you're running away from responsibility, emotionally unstable/immature, cursing and fighting everyone, then I will look at you as less of a woman.

Generally speaking however, I think women that are heavy on the make up tend to look a little trans. Why? Because I notice that transsexuals tend to go heavy on their make up to soften their features.

Although to be fair, how clothes look on you also depends on the clothing, not just your body frame. They could easily make clothes that don't require such a thin body type.
Victoria's secret models are pretty hot. I don't know how tall they are but short girls are more of a preference of mine, but if we are only talking about their shape then the models all have a desirable shape.
Sure I might prefer girls with larger bust, but the particular models are meant for their particular brand, as most brands cater to a particular shape.
And for the record, put any girl in a suit and pants with short hair, and you take away a lot of what makes them feminine. In short, victoria's secret model do not look like men in the least.
The thing about runway models and haute couture models in general is, that androgynous beauty is preferred. This doesn't make it any better or worse than a pin up model, for example. It's simply a different type of model. Tall and slender is associated with glamour, which these fashions are marketed as. Have you noticed the male models in this category? They are androgynous also, as well as the Korean male heartthrobs. No one is any less of a man or woman for the type of their beauty or model that they are.
Those supermodels i always assumed were thin because they modelled clothes and it was cheaper to make tiny samples and designs lmao... thats probably kinda dumb now as i think about it. Then because they model the most beautiful clothes worldwide many women began to associate them with beauty and strive for that look, however that is strictly a western thing, they would be seen as very unnattractive body wise in the Caribbean and a girl like that would desperately try to put on weight but the ideal is different in different parts of the world. From what i have seen on this site the western men who are mostly white on this site, consider those supermodels the ideal.
but i dont think those models are masculine cause there are so many body types but i am not a fan of that type of body but a face helps a lot in femininity and pretty is pretty and some of them have quite pretty faces. not all though lol
I think the ideal would be somewhere in the middle. Ot would be curvier than a VS model but thinner than the picture of the girl at the bottom.
Realistically I think VS models are marketed more towards women than men. Also thet all have nice faces. If a girl had an average face and that same body type she wouldn't be nearly as popular.

Well I'm 5'8" and slim and I have DDD breast so I rarely shop at Victoria Secret because all of the padding is annoying. But I think adriana lima and Jessica rabbit are beautiful

I am not fat, but my skin covers that up nicely; and if you look at the second picture I posted of Milana Vayntrub, you can't see her neckbones either.
I'm quite shocked by how critical of women's bodies you're being Mesonfielde. Of course promoting severely underweight models isn't great, but neither is what you are doing here. I think you should look back at some of your comments from as objectively as you can. You're being hyper critical of women who look perfectly fine, even going so far as to say features which have nothing to do with their shape, are masculine. If you were a woman you would be accused of being catty or jealous bit either way they are counter productive.
@Unhappy_Sock I'm not a woman though, I'm male :P And my reason behind that is that these are models, they are PAID MONEY because they' supposedly are attractive and look pretty. But so far, pretty much no male I know personally actually finds them attractive. Yet, women tend to aspire to be just like them, because "these girls are guys' dreams!" well if you ask me nightmare at best
@Unhappy_Sock What's the point of modeling clothes on them if they aren't attractive with or without said clothes? Isn't the whole purpose of modeling clothes on actual people that it'll make them look more attractive and therefore show that it makes them more attractive and therefore boost the sales rates once people see how attractive these girls are in said clothes?
I'll never get the modelling agency, who are they modelling for? Gay men? If so, then why on earth are they using female models?
In that case, you would think they'd model with average shaped women with attractive faces, and thus market to a bigger market (the mean of the normal distribution), instead of just trying to make people feel bad about themselves.
i totaly disagree with you man. I find the VS models to be stunning, they are absolutely gorgeous and i know many guys who think they are sexy. just because you like short curvy women doesn't mean every guy likes that. I like girls of all heights, but i also find tall women very feminine too. I don't associate femininity with shortness or thickness, i honestly don't like thick girls and the girl that you said was beautiful is kinda chubby in my opinion. by the way, if you are a healthy weight your collar bone should show, if it doesn't show you are most likely overweight
Not really though! There's instinctual hotness related to evolution and partners who look reproductively fit and then there's societal beauty that changes with the times, with the cultures. We're humans, we've used reason that goes against evolution but at the same time still ensures our survival. If we boast something loud enough and get enough followers, we can convince people of anything.
i find them hot. i mean i always had a crush on Adriana Lima and she is gorgeous in my opinion. There is nothing manly about a tall skinny woman. women of all heights can be hot
I haven't really looked at VS models much, but judging by the pic you provided: I don't find any of the three attractive, but the only one that looks like a dude (or more accurately a tranny) is the one on the left. The other two actually have pretty good looking faces, but unfortunately their bodies ruin it for me.
I think they look like women, not every female is going to have a big bust or big hips etc. We obviously all grow in different shapes in sizes, however the models are called models because the lingerie and clothes are supposed to wear them not the other way around theyre meant to be long and tall etc because it's easier for clothing to be shown or whatever.
There is no such thing as the "ideal" female body type.
A woman's physical attributes, or lack of them, should not take away from her femininity. You as a woman, should be uplifting other women, not putting down those skinny women.
Those models, chosen, have to be thin, because clothes hang off of them. They're practically walking clothes hangers.
If you think you're hot, why bother commenting on someone else's body?
Except I will probably prefer the girls you posted as my girlfriends. I do love that they are skinny but also has really nice curves. And they have very cute faces. The models are more hot than cute.

That dad is right on point. There ain't much feminity in those models, apart from having really beautiful faces. Body wise, yeah they look like 13 year old boys.

I find both the Victoria secret models and that girl attractive but neither are my ideal. They definetly don't look masculine though. Not everyone has the same ideal body shape.
Their faces are feminine, its just that they have a really low body fat percentage which is necessary for the "classic" female body shape and breast to be more prominent.

First off, yeah they may be skinny in most areas, but unlike other kind of models the VICTORIA SECRET models actually have nice size boobs they look completely feminine, so stop trying to body shame✋
I think maybe some Victoria Secret models that have a rectangular body type or no curves could pass, but I don't think Candice would, she has some curves.
yes!!! I find tall women just as feminine as short women. My ex was 5'11 and had legs for days man. Most women I've dated have been over 5'5. I guess It's the legs or maybe its the fact that i'm 5'7 and want tall sons lol
@Eric644 I know, because they think they starve themselves to look like that but they actually work out and eat right to be like that and they aren't to thin either, most guys like the way they look
