I know from having brothers, then asking my Mom what it was for, not a "Man Thong"!
Jockstrap can be worn alone to support the guy's penis and scrotum, it's more elastic than a guy's tighty whities so it fits snigger around his package. Some jock straps are just support type without a pouch for the protective cup, while the cup type has a pouch which the hard plastic cup slips into, the guy then places the cup part over his package to protect the family jewels. (I've seen my guy model this a few times when we were getting ready to play softball.) Think of the cup as cupping your hand over your groin covering your vaginal area. That's what it's doing for the guy, protecting his balls from getting a bad bruise! According to my guy and brothers, some guys don't like to wear them because they're not so comfortable. Have to ask the guys exactly why, I can't answer that part.
Must hurt bad, because once at a softball tourney I witnessed a pitcher take a line drive to the crotch, he was not wearing a cup which was quickly guessed by the amount of pain he appeared to be in. The poor guy had to be literally helped off the field, he couldn't walk or stand on his own, I think they also took him to the emergency room! After seeing that, I alway do a cup check on my guy when we're heading out to play softball or baseball. Don't want his boy parts to be incapacitated if we can help it!!

I have learned the difference from boyfriends over the years, but generally no it's not real common knowledge for single women with out male children. It's not information that I have ever needed to know to function in life.
Do you know what the difference between the number and letter or what sister sizes are in bra sizing?
