Yeah... Well if it was that then, he probably just got a little scared, because he didn't know what to do. Many guys will over-think social situations. So just to clarify, what do you mean by "flinch"? do you mean he moved away and didn't hug you at all, or do you mean that he flinched, and then he hugged you.

And considering he clearly likes you, you can ask him. He may feel a little embarrassed, but then he will know, and so will you.
