i fat shame everyone because equality
Why do you fat shame others anyway?
because fats are gross and they're a burden on this world. They require more food/more clothing/more space is general. They have a bigger ecological footprint and the gov't spends billions of dollars in health care to something that is completely preventable: obesity. So my shaming and hatred for fats does not go unjustified.
But how does that help the situation? You are only making those people feel worse about themselves, which is actually not encouraging them to lose weight, but rather continue in their downward spiral.
false, fat shaming works for the most part. There's a reason why obesity has been on the rise as the years go by, because of shitty movements like HAES and fat acceptance are telling people it's perfectly healthy to be fat and many people are stupid enough to believe it due to the simple fact that obesity is slowly becoming normalized (if that hasn't happened already)
Here's a meta analysis to support this

"our findings suggest that primary motivating factors for adolescent weight loss may be intrinsic (e. g., desire for better health, desire to improve self-worth)"
Seriously? That is the interpretation you get from that article? No where does it imply that fat shaming is motivating. It's perfectly fine not to accept the obesity epidemic and to provide constructive criticism AND positive motivation in order to lose weight, but shaming someone has the opposite effect. You are lowering their perception of self worth just to increase your own. There is a huge difference between promoting weight loss and degrading a person.
Do you have any evidence to claim that shaming has the opposite effect? I'm not against positive motivation and constructive criticisms as long as it doesn't deny the reality of how destructive obesity really is. I rather just be an asshole and shame them because that works too. Both serve as mechanisms to make a fat person feel aliented from others and "abnormal" and we all know how humans beings don't like to deviate from whats considered normal. Id rather just take the "asshole" route.

Not necessarily the opposite effect but it does cause a whole lot of other psychological issues and unhealthy behaviours...

It definitely doesn't encourage healthy weight loss, but rather puts them at risk for eating disorders. It would be just like teasing a kid because they are ugly or they don't fit in; it damages their sense of self, which carries into adulthood. It comes from the basic principles of motivation and willingness to change; punishment (ie shaming) does not encourage a person to change their behavior.
it doesn't have the opposite effect at all, you haven't been able to provide evidence that fat shaming doesn't work, just that fat shaming isn't the nicest way to go about it as it hurts peoples feelz and I already knew that. You are right that it normally doesn't encourage healthy weight loss BUT it results in weight loss nonetheless. Also, this study was done using adolescents (so mostly kids and teenagers who are especially impressionable at that age and more likely to engage in riskier and stupid shit?) so Im assuming if you used middle aged adults for such a study, these results would probably be different. Regardless, I don't fat shame kids (despite my original comment of saying everyone, I primarily meant men and women), just adults because if they're still a fat by adulthood, the onus is on them.
"Higher levels of teasing frequency and being bothered by teasing were related to greater odds of adolescents endorsing severe levels of binge eating behaviors"...
Binge eating; one of the major causes of obesity.
Sure just like "more likely to use unhealthy and ODC behaviors such as restricting carbohydrates, fasting, taking laxatives, and vomiting." are associated with losing weight" (albeit unhealthy but again thats not the point - weightloss still achieved) "These results suggest that exposure to teasing from one source is associated with risky dieting while two exposures (family and peers) is related to more restrictive eating practices." - risky dieting and restrictive eating do not directly lead to obesity.
"One hypothesis is that the majority of participants were still overweight even after weight loss." "More research is clearly needed to understand the frequency and impact of teasing on overweight teens, even in light of weight loss." - even the study itself attests to the fact that despite these young people engaging in bad weight loss methods, they STILL lost weight regardless. Again like it or not, fat shaming works.
But when it comes down to it, are you really fat shaming people to "get them to lose weight"? I think it is just to be mean and inflate your own self worth.
And how is developing Bulimia or Anorxia any different? They are still disorders that require a lot of time and money to treat. You are simply trading one eating disorder for another.
Maybe you should shame people who have mental illnesses as well since they are also a large economic burden on society.
Your argument is fallacious. People do not have control over being mentally ill which is largely the result of the absence or influx of certain types of neurotransmitters or hormones in your brain (depending on the mental illness specifically) however people do have control over their eating habits and putting down the fork. Also, exercise not only aids in weight loss but reduces symptoms of depression - one of the most common mental illnesses out there.
As an anecdote, I'm mentally ill and I'm still not fat - putting it out there so you understand that being mentally ill cannot be compared to being obese nor does it serve as an excuse for being obese.
But yet shaming someone for being fat can contribute to them developing mental illness. I was severely bullied as a child for being underweight. As a result, I developed crippling social anxiety and depression, which still affects me to this day. My point; you are helping contribute to another person's risk of developing a mental illness.
if that was your point you did a pretty terrible job at showing it, regardless it's probably true. There is a correlation between obesity and developing a mental illness. Who wasn't bullied these days, I was overweight my entire childhood up until I reached the age of 14 and this is due to the fact that my family are enablers. I was bullied for it until I decided to make a lot of changes to my diet and found the gym. I understand where you're coming from but reality is that most people are fat because they have poor eating habits and lead a sedentary lifestyle due to sheer laziness and unwillingness to be healthy. I just can't respect that and that makes not being an asshole to them hard.
Besides, you're in luck because nowadays I don't even talk to people and that includes the fatties so you won't hear any fat shaming coming from me - at least offline ;)
To humiliate the competition.
Exactly!
This is one of the few times that we agree on something.
@cth96190 It's not ideologic

I think you missed the whole point of the question.
Fat girls are unattractive. Slim girls are attractive.
Being attractive depends on you when you are a girl. All you have to do is lose weight, while us men have to gain muscle, which is so much more difficult.
