I got caught shoplifting are my parents right to punish me by giving me a taste of prison life?

I got caught stealing a small bottle of vodka from our local shop, because the shopkeeper knows my parents he called them instead of the police, now I am being punished BIG time, my parents said they don't want me to go to jail, so are giving me a taste of prison life, they said thieves get locked up and punished.
I am now on a weeks holiday from school, and my parents have confined me to the spare bedroom ( LOCKED IN ) for the entire week it has just a bed and a desk and chair in it, it is VERY small and I am locked in, I have to eat in my room, and get permission to use the bathroom, where I have to wait for my door to be unlocked then escorted there and back, I get half an hours exercise in the garden each day then I am locked back in for the rest of the day
LIGHTS OUT at 9pm,
each day I am set schoolwork to do essays lines etc,
so far I have served 2 days of prison and I still have another 7 days to go its HURTING and I don't like this punishment
DO YOU AGREE WITH MY PARENTS OR AM I BEING PUNISHED TO HARSHLEY?

can you belive my friend has just came to my house to give me an invitation to her pool party next Saturday, my parents said i was allowed a visitor like in real prison, they let me out of my room for half an hour to chat with her, can you imagine how i felt when my parents told her i won't be going, i was then escorted back to my room then hearing the door SLAMMING shut then the key turning in the lock ( CLICK ) now do you have sympathy?

yesterday and Thursday my cousins came over to stay so my parents let me out of my room because they didn't think it was right to keep me locked in while we had guests, so I had 2 days of freedom, I am now locked back in my room and I will have to stay here until Monday morning, I am BORED , MISREABLE and totally FED UP, the pool party is this evening and I am locked up, the weather outside is hot and sunny, do you think my punishment is too harsh? opinions please?

Well yes I don’t see any merit in the punishment. You should be doing something social not being isolated. This makes people crazy it does not help them become rehabilitated. I think maybe your parents are trying to scare you into not stealing again by showing you prison but prisons are set up horribly as well. It is not something they should be trying to emulate in my opinion. Prisons are highly unethical and most often create reoffenders bc people are dehumanized instead of rehabilitated...

I think community see ice volunteering somewhere instead of getting to go to the pool party would be better

People in prison often can’t handle being outside of prison and intentionally go back. Life gets too overwhelming bc they were prevented from having any control for too long

A deterrent is something meant to dissuade you from doing something by making it unpleasant

I think all they are doing is teaching you that as long as you are not locked in you can do anything you want and the problem is you got caught

Well, I think it's pushing a limit with the law and I don't feel too comfortable with it, but, really, I don't disagree with them. This punishment is harsh enough to force you to never forget it and so you won't ever commit a theft again. In real prison, you stay for YEARS and no parents to give you bathroom breaks - you pee and poop in your cell with your cellmate watching.

Like I said. You should consider yourself lucky. Believe me, it would be a lot worse in jail. For one thing, you won't really have any entertainment privileges, no internet, no phone (aside from the payphone which you can use for 3 minutes a week) the food will suck, you have to stick to a strict daily schedule, you have to shower in cold water with the other prisoners, share your cell with perhaps a dozen other inmates, do your assigned housekeeping chores (jails are usually cleaned by the inmates), and you will be at constant risk of getting the crap beaten out of you by other inmates for nothing. And, you will have to endure this for the whole several months of your sentence. I have relatives that work as guards and they say that every day in jail is a horror story.

And after you serve your sentence, you will have a criminal record which will make it hard for you to get into college or even find a minimum wage job.

If you don't like being punished, then I have a simple tip for you. DON'T BREAK THE LAW!! It is that simple. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out.

Ok well it does sound extreme adding on an extra 2 days for this, 7 would be a more than sufficient punishment and even take 2 days off this if u are showing u are really sorry. In prison prison sentence is extended for bad behaviour more so than reduced for good behaviour. Your impulsive behaviour has led you down this road, they don’t want to release you until they know you’ll stop stealing and doing illegal shit. Acting aggressive towards them is only going to make them less trusting of you.

Your punishment will suck but it will be engrained, so that you don’t do it again, if you went unpunished you would forget the consequences and likely repeat the crime, prison doesn’t just teach you a ‘lesson’ but justifies making you feel just what the owners felt when you stole some alcohol, let alone any rare product you ever planned you might get away with in your 20’s. -shock, frustration, potential anger. Eve though you feel that you won’t do it at a greater scale it doesn’t take much to go way too far and steal expensive shit.

I don’t believe your an evil person but you stepped out of line and did something you will hopefully never forget, you can redeem. Drinking alcohol has laws put in place to stop you from ending up an alcoholic ruining your potential future as an adult. Too much alcohol at such a young age really damages the brain at your age and can really screw with your waking life. stealing is self explanatory.

The essay assignment is useful until your forced to trace a copy 3 other times. The brain likes to filter information out if it becomes too repetive, surely writing all four pages out once and reading through it every hour or so should be enough. They are likely doing this so you have something to do for 7 days other than exercise, use the toilet or eat briefly.

The 4 essay is still a grey zone though, since the punishment should be enough with just being isolated with nothing to do and nowhere to go for 7 days, but again it gets your brain thinking and may allow you to form an ideal lesson you’ve learned behind the problem you caused. I believe your parents are being a little harsh here but I don’t think they are evil for enforcing more rules and guidelines to your punishment.

GUESS WHAT? my parents have let me out of my bedroom early they said i am free to do what i like for the rest of the day, yeh, they want me to sign a contract saying i will behave in future, if i don't then i will have to suffer lockdown again, but next time unless i shoplift again which i won't then i will only be locked up for a weekend, i think that's fair don't you?

i know my parents mean well but why do i have to suffer such a painful and dull punishment, its really harsh and i don't like it surly i don't deserve to be punished like this?

Well why did you decide to go and steal? You have to learn actions have consequences. You're not supposed to like it, that's why it's called punishment. Your parents have done a great job, most parents would just have a go at them or ground them etc. But yours are going the extra step to show you the repercussions of your actions, let's hope you learn from it.

part of my punishment is to write a 4 page essay each day then copy it out 2 times total 12 boring pages, today my essay is why its wrong to steal, i hate essays my parents said its to make me think about what i have done wrong as well as to punish me, do you agree with the essays or is it too much punishment?
