Oh ok sorry I was not specific enough... I’m asking what this phrase is generally suoosed to mean. Obviously you could not know what any person you never met, in a context I never mentioned, may have meant by the use of this phrase. So I’m accepting completely generalities in this case. Context was... I was trying to think what I can do with my life professionally. Studying & subsequently, career wise.

I didn’t say this. Bc I was busy doing something else at the time. I was half talking/ half typing. To be fair, It’s possible I did not appear ultra serious. Neither was I joking. It was an honest question.

I would like to know more context but in general it could be that he is teasing you as his smiling and winning

For example if somebody in teasing way did a prank or said something like a joke or did something but you positively responded and played his prank on him or any situation that would be like you win so it could be considered you turned the tables as he was about to win and suddenly you played your wild card and you win that's turning tables

There are two meanings I can think of.

The litteral meaning: it's another name for being a waitress, basically he's saying you'd make a good waitress.

The symbolic meaning: it means turning a bad and desperate situation into a good one.
Example: if a team was losing a game, then they turned the table and unded up winning.

So really we can't know how he meant it unless we know what he thinks of you in general.

Turning the tables normally or often means shifting blame onto the other person when under attack.

However i think in this case the turned tables means turning your disadvantage into advantage.

I dont know what the origin is.. i should probably look that up.

Ok so the reference is board games, thats the table and turning them is coming back to maybe win or at least take the lead from a trailing or losing position.
