What does it mean when they say "You are good people" to YOU. It sounds absurd English.

It looks like this is a new term that has come up. What does it mean? Why do they address a single person as "people"?

On the same line, I was with a colleague the other day and he commented on this other colleague and says "I don't mean it badly; she's good people; but..."
