Why do little girls have to wear tops at the beach?

I have 7 year old boy/girl twins. I can easily explain that he wears bigger swim bottoms than she does because boys and girls are not the same below the waist.

But I can never explain to my daughter why she needs a top and her brother does not. I always just tell her “Eh, society.” She has the exact same tiny nipples that her brother does.

I think she should be allowed to do whatever the others are doing as long as she is comfortable with it. If she's the only girl and you both feel safe with the boy (s), then she can wear what they are wearing. If she's the only little girl running around topless and the other girls are wearing theirs, she'll likely want it on anyway. That's how I was.

We had a isolated back yard, I felt safe with my brothers around, and rarely wore much. None of us did. But when other girls were around, I wanted to be like them. So if there was a mix of girls doing suits / topless / no suits, I was usually on the bare side. If every other girl was wearing her top, I wanted to wear my top.

Something's just don't need to be explained, is the simple answer.

You tell her the dress code for men and women. That's what being a parent is all about my dear. You know better for a child and it is your job to guide them into functioning Respectful members of society. A childs job is to trust you have the best intentions for them. And young children do for the most part...

As they grow older, society will show them through experiences, how women who don't observe social customs are dealt with. Same with men who don't observe social customs, like assault.

Society is the best teacher of tough to explain lessons.

In the first place, she's only 7 so, don't make her wear one.
Secondly, she really shouldn't HAVE to wear one even when she gets older. As you said, she's got the same nipples as him. Why does she have to cover them but he doesn't? Besides, the only difference between them is that her tits will get a lot bigger but, she'll be allowed to show as much of those as she wants, as long as her nipples are covered, which he's got, too so, why doesn't he have to cover his? Doesn't make any sense to me!
You could always get some of those round Band-Aids and put one on each of her nipples. I've seen grown women do that.

I think nobody should have to wear tops. Tits are not all that when everyone has their tits out. The thing with prepubescent girls and tits... fuck man, I guess the only answer I could come up with is "Eh, society" as well. In California it is legal to be nude on any beach through the age of 12 for both genders, although no parent allows it except at nude beaches. It might be that way in your state as well, you should check.
