Are girls able to be more insensitive towards men than the other way round ?

Tonight one of my male work colleagues who at times can say quite outlandish things was telling a story that was a bit wild to myself and many other colleagues in our work group chat and he is the nicest guy it's just his way of communicating/humour.

One of the female colleagues at one point jokingly replied" WTF are you talking about you absolute freak"... of course this was in joke and it got a few laughing emoji reactions and of course the guy himself replied haha yeah sorry I get a bit carried away... to save face and then he went quiet for a short while... I did respond myself at the time ohhh that's a bit harsh with a laughing emoji so even I despite calling it out felt I needed to add the laughing emoji to not look like i was having a pop at the girl...

It got me thinking if this had been the other way round, the guy would have got torn apart for calling the girl an absolute freak even if he was meaning in a similar joking fashion and if that girl had decided not to play it down and act hurt by the comment the group would have backed her... yet the guy had to play it down/man up.

I enjoy analysing social behaviour and would love to hear everyone's thoughts.
