Not to meet men. Just to make some acquaintances and have some interesting discussions. Or should I try a language class?

Language class sounds better. Who in the right mind wants to read books decided by other people. You should pick what you feel like reading. It's one thing to get recommendations but actually needing to either buy or borrow a certain authors book, is fishy, it's like all the university teachers try to get their students to buy their course literature. It's filled with money traps and not good intentions.
