My new friend is having a birthday next week. Around the time when we’re catching up for brunch. Mum explained to me (as a confused person with Asperger’s); that it’s inappropriate to buy a gift, unless I treat her to a coffee and a birthday card when we catch up and nothing else. I met the new friend at an Asperger’s syndrome social group, so we’ve both got it.

Hey, for a new friend's birthday, I think just treating her to a coffee and a card when you meet up for brunch is a really nice idea. Since you guys just started being friends, a big gift might come on too strong. The coffee and card is personal enough to show you care that it's her special day, but not overly much since you're still getting to know each other. And since you both have Asperger's, I'm sure she'll totally understand keeping it low key too. Your mom gave you good advice - it's better to play it safe when first making a new friend. I'm sure just spending time with you on her birthday over brunch will make her feel really good. Nice work making a new friend at your group too! Sounds like you picked a good one. Hope you both have a good catching up for her birthday.
a card and a cup of coffee seem appropriate
