At what point does a girl become a woman?

Somewhat of a follow-up to a previous question. I was listening to a podcast recently. The host detailed a conversation with "young girl", who in fact turned out to be 23 years old. My reaction was "she's 23 years old. She's a young woman." I've seen similar posts like that here, where a female user will say something like "I'm a 29-year-old girl" or something or other.

So when does a girl become a woman?

I would say about 15. In the west society has largely infantilised us. Kids are now dependent on their parents up until the age of 22 maybe even 30 in many cases. Think about parents approaching retirement financially responsible for full grown adults.

I was raised to be self responsible at age 16, I got by GED by that age and got a job while taking night classes. I met my wife two years ago when she was 15 at church and we married when she turned 16 and are both living a good life and in 3 years we will own our own home and aren't crippled by a mountain of student debt. We have two cars, both bought used rather than leasing or taking out a loan to buy new. A Honda accord 2014 and a civic 2016.

Bluntly? Menarche. I know that sounds kind of reductionist, and it is, but biological divisions have biological barriers. Boys becoming men, lacking an equivalent watershed moment, also lack a social version, and the vagueness of that boundary props up a lot of the social trouble we're seeing from them these days.

that really depends on what we're talking about...

for most Olympic, athletic events... that's probably quite old to get into

but other sports like tennis or soccer... that is still, very young

I think the use of girl, rather than woman, depends on the context, including the age of the speaker, and the focus of the conversation: sexual maturity, social maturity, legal rights, etc.

At least by 21 a girl becomes a woman.

Having said that, women want to be seen as youthful so even distinctly mature women want to be called girls. It is almost an insult not to.

I me and we could use puberty but that's a private matter. With former students that I'm still in contact with after graduation I called them girls when in high school but women afterward in college.

I'm going to say physically at around the age of 23-24. Mentally it can vary there's a lot of things that affect us mentally
