How would you react if a little kid had a crush on you?

This little girl has a crush on me and handed me a picture she drew of us holding hands.

I used to babysit and tutor a kid who crushed on me. He was the SWEETEST! He always behaved so well whenever I was there so the mom would have me around really often so she could work. (I stopped working for them when the stepdad got weird.) On my last day the kid made me an origami whale (which is still have stored in a box someplace…). That kid should be about 40 now. Hope he’s happily married to a gal who deserves him with a bunch of adorable kids who have his enormous honey-brown eyes. 😂


The following year the kid next door (around the same age as the kid I had been tutoring) came over with his mom for tea. We were chatting and he saw a pic of me with my bff (a tall lanky Italian guy). So he pushed back his hair and asked me… “Is that your boyfriend?” I said no, just a friend. “Hmm. He’s looking at you like he’s your boyfriend.” I laughed and set the picture down and walked the kid to the kitchen for a snack. He was very stuck on the idea of the guy in the photo, though. So he thanked me for the cake and milk I gave him and said “When I’m older, if that guy is stupid and hasn’t asked you to marry him, would you marry me?” I can’t tell you guys how my jaw dropped at this very bold little kid just going for what he wanted…. “I think you should ask your mom’s permission before talking to any girl about marriage, don’t you think?” He was so cute, thinking about it… “You’re probably right. I should also ask Stephanie.” So I asked who Stephanie was… “She’s just a girl in my class, but we share a desk and crayons, so she’s someone is should ask too. I don’t want to hurt her feelings.” (I laughed at this little player and told him to go sit with his mom.) He’s also 40/41 now… and hopefully happily married to a girl who likes sharing her desk and crayons with him. 😂

Okay so, like I said, you have to ignore it. Still be friendly to her, but nothing more. If the situation gets out of hand, talk with the girl’s parents or guardians.

If this pint-sized admirer were to approach me, I'd gently kneel down, ensuring not to scare them with my unconventional attire.

I'd explain, in the simplest terms possible, that what I do is a special kind of pretend-play for grown-ups.

I'd encourage their creativity, suggesting they explore their own forms of playtime, maybe with a rocking horse and a few stuffed animals.
