Do you change your hairstyle when your dating status shifts?

Hey Guys and Gals!

So there's a stereotype that when a person breaks up with someone you know bc they change their hairstyle to signify a "fresh start". (Ironically, I've seen more guys get a fresh haircut when they're ABOUT to start something, whereas I've seen women get the new "I'm single" haircut/restyling.)

Last term (Aug-Dec) I watched a girl I know get four drastic haircuts in 3-4 months. Each time I noticed she'd tried to date a guy, pulled in a different unavailable guy, then changed her hair completely. It went from VERY LONG (waist-length) cascading down her shoulders to a messy bun; then changed to the same length, color and style as mine (bottom of the shoulder blades), which was creepy; then to a shoulder-length "mountain hair" style blowout; then finally to a short chin-length bob. It was as though she was having a massive identity crisis. She'd had the very long hair for at least five years... WHY change? And so many times? It seemed strange, esp for a gal -- we tend to get very fussy about our "look" and style, perhaps changing things up once a season, but not every month this way... And none of the new styles were particularly fetching on her either. It was odd... as though she were trying to impress someone... but no one seemed particularly impressed.

Anyway, what are your thoughts on the haircut thing? Do you get a new cut and style every time your relationship status changes?

My hairstyle has been consistent for the last 15 years. I've been cutting my own hair about that long... since I was 16 ish.

But recently, (approximately 6 months ago), I've decided I want to grow my hair and go for a more boho look.

Dating status doesn't change what I think looks good and what I want to do with my hair.

I've always wanted to grow my hair, but I always felt it was too curly to grow long. Now I'm testing the limits to see how long I can grow it before it becomes unmanageable.

Women often view their hair and the style of it as integral to their identity.

Perhaps it's why bald men are still considered attractive, but bald women almost never are.

Therefore, they tend to dye it weird color or cut it short when they go through trauma or a bad breakup. Not always the reason, but it's a common theme I've witnessed.

I don't know that I’ve ever seen a bald woman outside a hospital setting… probably bc of wigs/hats and such.

I’ve never dyed my hair any color before I hit 50 and now it’s just a hint of silver I touch up at home, 123, np. Did a “locks for love” thing a few times, which was a drastic cut when I was young. A summer “chop” (1-2” to get all the split ends), which lets the crazy summer highlights pop around and I’m set.

I like a good blowout, though, bc I hit the networking and conference scenes a lot.

More traditional women don't use neon-colored hair to scare away potential suitors, in a quasi-celebration of ugliness.

I only changed my hair when I became single because it was so long and he didn't want me to trim it. It was giving me headaches, so I had it cut to mid-back in long layers. I like how it is, and the only change I would make is if I started getting grey or if it started to thin too much. I still haven't had my first grey hair, so we'll see. But I wouldn't say I would change it due to relationship status. In fact, if a guy started to push me to change my hair, I'd see it as a red flag.

When I was re-dating after my divorce, I didn't change anything, but... I was balding, so had my hair short (buzzed) anyways.

I did grow a beard for the first time, didn't like it at first, but then grew it back and still have it now, trimmed to 9 mm.

I think that's just a stereotype, but it doesn't match the reality most of the time. I have seen that both guys and girls sometimes have a haircut when they are starting dating. I have never do that, but I could have done it in some situations.

But I've never notice that a girl has had a haircut or has dyed her hair when she broke up.

It has been a long time since I had to experience a break-up (Thankfully). But I don't remember every changing anything about my appearance.

A lot of soul searching and self-inspection for sure.

It MAY be a girl thing.

TBH guys I know groom and shape up for special occasions and that’s it, unless they have a weekly/bi-monthly barbershop appt set up to look sharp for work.

i do have my hair cut appointments setup every 6 weeks.

looks good, feels good, works good... no reason to change it really

Not really lol. I've had three hairstyles my entire life, and really they're just different stages of the same hairstyle lol

Back when i was dating, No. I have had the same hair cut since i was like 15 lol. and the same facial hair since i was 25

I know it's well studied fact that when many women are dealing with significant mental issues they change their hairstyle

Yeah, that's what I figured it was, but I've never seen someone get FOUR looks in THREE months that way... Exception to those I know who are models and have a photo shoot or something, but that wasn't the case here. I'd say "mental break" the way she was acting.

Yes, I think mental break sounds likely. That much hairstyle change is extreme and unusual.
She doesn't sound like she has a very stable mind

Sad. I suspect the first one hit hard, left a hole, and she feels very unlovable. So she lowered her standards, changed her look because she felt ugly, and got hit with 3 more rejections. Only making it worse

Lots of women seem to do this for whatever reason. However, it is a huge detractor for a man who likes her hair to be a certain way.

Yes, but some men enjoy their woman's hair to be a certain way. It is attractive to them.
