A male dominated society where masculinity and "male traits" are seen as more powerful and better overall and femininity and "female traits" are seen as weaknesses and are less desirable.
So a man being "emotional" is weakness in a patriarchy. Only men being forced into wars because "women aren't strong or strong willed enough" is because of patriarchy. Men paying for everything because it's assumed men should make more and show that he can provide for a potential wife is part of patriarchy. "Women and children first... Because women and children are weak and need protecting" patriarchy. Women getting custody of children more than men because caregiving is skewed in favor of women, because of the patriarchy.
It may be because of patriarchy but don't assume every guy born on earth agreed to all of it, the system can be burdensome to us too...
I know lol but the same guys who complain about this kind of stuff are the same guys who are against feminism, something that tries to dismantle the patriarchy. @hypno-trip

They complain about this stuff and distance themselves feminism because they feel feminism doesn't represent their issues. Feminism doesn't seem to attempt to dismantle this idea of patriarchy so much as undermine men altogether. If those things are because of patriarchy then feminists are dismantling it halfheartedly. Women are still seen as weak and in need of protecting expect that protection comes in the form of victimhood and freedom from accountability and responsibility - and though policy changes that favor women, not equality. There's a lot of picking and choosing what changes are made. Disadvantages go, special treatment stays, because vagina.
@AllThatSweetJazz policy changes? You mean the ones where feminists fought for more fathers to get custody? Or when the right for women to fight in wars was fought for? Or the demand for things like changing tables in men's bathrooms?
I don't know what feminism you're talking about but real feminists try to uplift men as well, and tell them that they are allowed to feel human and have emotions and that its okay to have weaknesses and thoughts other than sports and fighting, that they will be heard if they come forward with rape allegations, that if a teacher raped them they will not be given a high five and told they should enjoy it and that they are lucky.
That's some of the little things about patriarchy that feminists want to change.
@allrhatsweetjazz and if women are still seen as weak it's because all of these campaigns like heforshe, the "dove real body types" or "throw like a girl" thing are made fun of. Something that is showing women as MORE than just sexualized models and weaklings is meant to uplift women from that oppression.
Feminists fight for women rapists to be put behind bars just like men. Women do not want women pedophile teachers to go off the hook, but it's men who say things like "lucky kid" and vote "not guilty".
When exactly are we free from accountability and responsablility? When men still think of us as weak and incapable of horrible crimes and let us go?

Why is it that women's requirements of physical ability to join the military are lower?
The feminism I hear about is trying to call men using "logic" abuse. It's trying to make cheating on a girlfriend criminalized as rape while the same woman who pushed for that admitted to cheating on her partner with 5 other guys. It's getting people kicked out and banned for life from CalgaryExpo and affiliate events for trying to criticize feminism. It criticizes Spiderwoman illustrations and calls them sexist, then turns out to be completely wrong. ShirtStorm. Worst of all on my mind at the moment; a scientist was forced to resign and was shamed out of his career for saying something that could be interpreted as sexist if you were so inclined, when it shouldn't matter what he thinks even IF it was sexist.
You could say that's not all feminists but they sure do have a loud voice, actually make ground and do damage, so I'd say you have a tough time reining them in.
That is illogical, the term patriarchy is rule by a father or in the context your using it man. In the context you are using it it would be impossible since according to feminst theory patriarchy is rule by men for the benefit of men which this is not. If it in no way benefits them then how could you claim its patriarchy? Thats is just a bigoted cop out so you don't have to change your views on men and see them as human beings that are subject to the same, pardon my language, bullshit that women are.
@hellionthestage the country, and most of the world, does exist for the benefit of men. Mostly white men in power in the government, all around the world the son inherits the family wealth and daughters are a burden because they are given away and the family also has to give money and gifts to the grooms family. Sons get the family name and pass it on, not daughters. Women historically have had less privilages (owning land, voting, marrying who they want)
Even entertainment is catered towards men (though there has been a positive shift in recent years) half naked women in video games, random naked women in action movies, unneeded sex scenes with he hero and a forgettable hot girl, commercials for food with half naked women, commercials for women's products with sexualized women. Serialization of women in general, we can't go topless like men can, even though it used to be illegal for men to be topless too. Because breasts are for male sexual enjoyment and should not be shown,

All of these things dehumanize women and lift up men. Of course since it's a very flawed way of living there are set backs for men, can't be "too girly" or you will be seen as "lesser" because being a female is lesser.
A matriarchy would be the opposite, major leaders and politicians would be mostly female, but that would probably also have flaws. We need a society and the world to be equal, and feminism works more towards that than patriarchy.
@AllThatSweetJazz I don't know much about the military, but I'm assuming it's different for women because of simple biology. I'm not going to pretend that the majority of women are just as strong as men because it's simply not true. But holding a gun and shooting people and your ability to be TRAINED is not affected by your gender.

The comparison I tire they used shows him with a curved back as if he's crouching, not as if he's sticking his ass out like that. I believe women are more capable of being in the military now because of the nature of modern warfare, but it makes sense to me to have single standard of ability for a soldier, as in this is what we expect from you (regardless of gender) to ensure we have a strong military. It makes me have to ask what else are women bringing to the table that men aren't to permit lower standards?
I think you're reaching to try and draw tiny differences from the pictures, it's an illustration, it's not perfect, I can't tell the difference. Even if she is sexualised, so what? It doesn't mean she's powerless just because she's sexy. Plus it's just one picture that is essentially fan submitted art, it's not like the rest of the time you see her she's being sexualised. Guys seeing her as "waiting to be fucked" and wanting to fuck her is entirely different, you can't just assume that's how guys think of her, how would you know?

What that scientists said is offensive and sexist, but he shouldn't lose his job over it, but it's completely fair if that college doesn't want him to come back. Allowing people who publicly announce their offensive ideas reflect badly on a college.

Because it makes men see women as only sexual objects for their viewing and fucking pleasure. It's dehumanizing, objectifying, we are treated as second class citizens because no one takes us seriously because we are only seen as sexual objects. This is something that needs to be changed in order for there to be equality and it's something feminism is working towards. but since so many people want to have their sexy women, we've gone into sexualizing men (why magic mike was such a big deal, finally something for women) but stuff like that only makes men deny anything is wrong. You're just assumung that how men interpet sexualised images. Finding a woman physically attractive doesn't mean we think we're entitled to her body or that she's just an object to be used or that she's good for nothing else or that we won't respect her. It's not a given that men view sexualised images that way. It comes down to how you take it. Any male comic book reader who doesn't take on-board that perhaps women would actually prefer to dress more modestly the first time it's mentioned to them is an idiot.
I don't think it's bad to have some sexualised content. You can have fanservice or porn catering to specific sexual tastes (for men or women) and that's fine e. g Twilight, 50 shades of grey. Then there's just certain content that's geared toward those people and if you're a girl consuming content designed with males in mind then naturally aspects about it would make you feel intimitated/disheartened/objectified/disrespected and so on, the same is true when genders are reversed.
There's obviously a demand for content that appeals to a more general audience, that's what you're really asking for and comic creators are aware of that and do tend to illustrate their characters keeping wider audience appeal in mind nowadays. But some women see female superhero characters with boob windows and such, yet can appreciate that they are powerful as well as sexy and unashamed.
The reason it's supposed to be bad is that it injects a worldview where women are sex objects and men are entitled to their sexuality. But I don't see that actually having any real influence on the way males in geek culture think about women. There is a basic level to which we all objectify each other and are attracted to one another, it's not objectification in it's proper use of the term unless it's outright corrupting people. But the vast majority of guys in my experience are mature enough to digest this content and not be poisoned.
For the most part it seems like the issue is well in hand. Objectification that is true, full blown, harmful objectification is limited to men and women that are bad eggs - and you're always going to have bad eggs.
