Why is my crush so cold with me?

so I'm almost 99% positive that this guy likes me because my friends tell me he's ALWAYS staring at me and turning around when he hears my name, and he shows up at the places that I go and seems to wanna talk to me but never makes a move. We have a tiny bit of history (we were getting to know eachother months ago, and I felt like I came on too strong and scared him away so I backed off) but now I feel like he wants to talk to me. So today I planned on playing something with him in music class, but he didn't show up until the last 5 minutes of class so I nudged him and said "yo where were you? I wanted to play drums" and all he says is "I had stuff to do" in a little cold and dry way... and then he walks away. Also, when I asked him, he made a face as if he's thinking "dammit, the only time she asks is when I'm not in class..." but I feel like he was a bit dry and cold with me.

is it because he thinks I'm not into him anymore so he's trying to act cool and tough? Do guys do that? Or was he scared or weirded out by the fact that I made a move on him so randomly?

ps. we're 16, and he's kinda popular but the awkward/shy type... and I can be pretty confident but I'm average :)
