Why do guys freak out when they find out that a girl plays video games?

Question

I was at a party and one of my friends mentioned that I gamed and all the other guys there went nuts. It kind of scared me a little to be honest, they were bombarding me with questions and talking to me as if I were a social anomaly and they'd never met a girl who games before...

Just an f. y. i., I don't mean just playing mobile games, I mean actual gaming (borderlands, bioshock, etc.)

What I'm asking is, why is it so surprising? Girls actually make up a decent percentage of gamers nowadays (not including the creepy old pervs that pretend to be girls). Is it weird that I game?

Because society has done an excellent job at molding what things men should not be into, as well as the things women should not be into. Which goes to show that the general population doesn't truly care about the real demographics of said things.

I'm a straight man. I love the arts, and can really have an artistic eye when it comes to fashion, colors, cooking, etc, even though those things are not my expertise. Sure, I like football, but otherwise I'm not a sports person. Heck, because of these things, back when I was 18-19, people thought I was gay.

Society does the same for women, especially in the media (which, by the way, I really hate how media exploits women so much in how they should look, feel, etc). According to such, women should always be fashionable, love cooking, be fit and smoking hot (but not sweat, which tells me "they" didn't study biology), and so on... For you to like video games, those guys freak out because 1) you share an interest that is probably their top interest, and 2) because the internet has done a good job molding a misconception of what a gamer girl is (sexualizing, just like with anything... -_-).

One of my best friends at my university is a hardcore gamer, so not a surprising thing for me.

Because girl gamers are actually rare. That study that claims half of gamers are female was an outright lie, just feminist propaganda. Christina Hoff Sommers has proven this. The study basically included anyone who had ever played a game, even a cell phone game, as a gamer. So if you're a girl, and you played Super Nintendo at a friend's house ten years ago, but haven't touched a game since, that study would have classified you as a gamer. IF you actually go to nerd conventions though, such as Magic the Gathering tournaments, video game promotions, D&D night at comic shops, etc. you'll find it's almost exclusively men attending. Often there will be a hundred men and not a single female. Not even ONE! Girl gamers are also notorious for looking down their noses at guy gamers and refusing to associate with them for the sake of being popular. It is normal for people to seek out a partner with similar interests, but unfortunately women have basically shunned the nerd community, and it's hard for nerds to find an actually attractive girlfriend, even if they're good looking themselves. Most girls who date nerds are of the short and fat variety. Think Oompa Loompa.

I'm willing to sit and watch while guys play games. I'm super uncoordinated and don't remember combos though so am pretty useless as a player, though my League-playing friend thinks I have fast enough reaction time to get really good at league. Idk.
I just like to hang out and I don't mind if games are involved though I'd usually rather watch than play. I'm usually up for getting crushed in steet fighter or old kids' games though lol.

It's not as rare as it used to be. Go back 10 years and you'd be a treasure.

Today there are many women gaming, some you would never even expect. Out of the 40 women at my job at least half play video games (PC/Xbox/PS/etc); aged range from 17 to 40, so there you go.

Perhaps where you live gender roles are still very strongly enforced, in which case you would indeed be a rarity.

I love in the UK and A LOT of women I meet play video games.

It's rare, and I wouldn't say we freak out, it's more along the lines of shocked. And yes I do know that contray to popular belief girls are starting to become good at playing games and some are pretty damn good at making us guys look bad. If anything take it as a compliment, it all adds up when you have a boyfriend or if your looking for one, more things to do that way :D

LOL, You are not an anomaly, You are a celebrity. Yes of course the number of female gamers is increasing. But its hard to find them face to face. Even if a girl plays games, they don't go on publishing their gaming skills. And most gamer boys think that gamer girls can be compatible in a relationship. Coz in most relationships, its mostly GF or Bioshock. Its never GF and Bioshock. Thats the reason they are surprised. And I think you are gonna get more proposals here too, as you hav said you play games. I play DOTA. DOTA 2 and Soldierfront 2. There a a lot of girls there too. Some of them play better than me ( Ya, I suck)

I'm guilty of it too - not just in games, though.
Pretty much in any location where girls are flaunting their girly-ness, I do get irritated, not because they're female, because they're egotistical and annoying.

I'd be glad meeting another girl who plays video games, so far I only know one and the rest are girly girls. Would be easier to date one too since we'd have something to talk about while girly girls are just too different.
