Does the popular guy ever secretly crush on the shy girl?

Im not sure if popular people gravitate towards me or if I gravitate towards them, but whatever the case I always find myself hanging out with them unknowingly. I'm a 6'2 basketball player too, so I guess to anybody I look like a "jock". The thing is I found myself crushing over girls who would never be included in the group, and often times is talked about by the popular girls, or they talking about them, but I can't help it. This one girl I liked was quiet, and shy. She wasn't really big on fashion and parties either, but I really liked her. She was in like 4 of my classes, and she always stayed with her small group. I mean why would I want a loud, air-headed, cheerleader who change who they lime or has drama every week, over that cute girl on the other side of the cafeteria that seems like they think more than they talk. I never asked her out though. I'm pretty sure most people fear rejection, and that something I wouldn't have to worry about dealing with most popular girls. They are very foward, and drop obvious hints. But when dealing with a shy girl it's up in the air.

Yes, I think it actually happens fairly often. I was one of the shy nerdy kids in middle school and I'm pretty sure one of the most popular guys in my class had a crush on me. I used to catch him glancing at me frequently and he sat right in front of me in our art class and he used to compliment my stuff all the time. One time he even said something pretty unusual to me, something along the lines of "why do you hang out with those girls (referring to the other nerdy girls who were my friends), you're better than them." I can't say for sure since he never admitted it outright but there were a lot of signs there.

Back in high school I was popular and I crushed on two girls, both were shy.

I am the popular guy at my school and i can assure you that i have crushed on the shy girl at my school. Went out with her, had sex with her, dumped her. But yes is my answer.
