It's a small minority of men who habitually cheat on girlfriends. However since they are seeing multiple women at once, women run into these guys a LOT. It's sort of like not many people are telemarketers, but since they phone people all day long, we all get lots of calls from telemarketers.
Anyway, reasons why? From what I've seen:
- it's normal among their peers.
- often have ideas in their head about good girls vs. sluts, and low expectations for female faithfulness (often based on their own experience with women cheating with them). So they pick a kind of prude girlfriend who they trust, while having wilder sex with 'sluts' on the side.
- ego stoked by multiple partners, not males have a drive to have more than one partner, in some guys that drive is higher than others. It's probably linked to sex drive, but not exactly the same (as far as I can tell I have a somewhat above average drive, but a significantly below average 'multiple women' drive).
- may feel safer and less vulnerable by having multiple options.
That's actually incorrect, if you study the data's collected my marriage counsellors etc its actually about 70% of men have cheated on their current partner, and about 60% of women. And most of those that havnt admitted they would if they were sure to not get caught. Monogamy is one huge lie.
@Dansexual marriage is a different situation. There are much bigger reasons why married people don't just break up and date someone new.

My point is that there are people who don't cheat when dating who end up cheating when married because they're unhappy but can't break up without losing their family. That's a different 'reason' then guys who habitually have 'side chicks'

Men cheat because they are bored, or want a little something different. They don't have to be unhappy with you or stop loving you. Men can have sex simply for entertainment without emotion. They are not programmed like we are and being monogamous is a societal pressure for them, the drive for new is always going to be there regardless of how happy and how much he may love you.
It sucks and we don't have to like it, but biology is biology and it can't be reformed.

I think men cheat because they are insecure. They sometimes feel like they can't obtain what they're women got. Or maybe they love there girlfriend enough that they just want to pop a pussy but still want there girl. They probably think they could get away with it. Because, the type of guys you're descibing don't want toput all their eggs in one basket. They also don't want to get rid of a girl entirely if they can see good things about her. Its kind of like that joke:

Stop generalising!!! Not all men cheat just like not all women cheat. The guys that do cheat do it for the same reason why some women cheat. There is something missing in their relationship. It is often something sexual with both genders but not always. Men and women that cheat think they will go else where to get that thing they need when they should be talking to their partner about it.
As I understand it, the most common reason for it is recreational sex. It's not that they don't love their partner to bits and have no desire to abandon their partner, they just want to have sex with someone else. Variety is appealing.
I forget where I heard this but, if you put a female mouse (might have been a rat) in with a male mouse (rat) the male will (probably) want sex. They'll go at it a bunch of times, but eventually the male will lose interest even if the female is still keen. But as soon as you put a new female in, the male becomes interested again and you can keep this process going until the male exhausts himself. Humans of course, will have much stronger emotional attachments that make them want to keep certain people in their life i. e not leave their partner, but variety is appealing and it's fun and satisfying to mix things up.

I am going to have to disagree here. I have seen a few girls that I would not mind being with. But I am not about to consider cheating. My line of reasoning is simple. If you want to destroy the trust others put into you, Your honor, Your integrity, and above all, your family, Cheating is the one solitary magic bullet that can destroy all that with one shot. I've never cheated, but I have been cheated on. I think in her case it was a matter of being indecisive, she couldn't decide which one of us she wanted to be with. I told her that if she wanted to be with me, that'd I'd go to her other boyfriend's house with her and we could all talk, she said she did. We got there and she went off with him and pretty much told him the same thing that she told me. Needless to say, she didn't end up with either one of us.

Not all guys cheat. I never cheated and don't think I ever will. When I was a teenager I just ended a relationship when I was interested in another girl. Yeah, you do. From an evolutionary standpoint, I think monogamy is more practical than just skipping around. Two people are way better at raising children than one, and young children (at least young boys) need father figures in their lives.
