What does it mean to be called "cutie" in a text? And is "good morning" a normal thing?

I've been texting someone regularly. We have good conversations and joke around a bit; have a lot in common. He often texts me "good morning," and later on. Today he added "cutie"... and I'm not sure how to take it.

I responded without really touching on the "cutie" name.

We're not involved or anything. He hasn't directly communicated interest beyond friends.

Guys, why and when would you call someone "cutie"? And texting "good morning/goodnight"... is that a normal thing? How should I respond to this stuff? I'm not used to men doing this.

And I've seen other girls hanging around him on campus, really pretty ones... I don't know why I'd be receiving the "cutie" thing. I don't think he's short on options. Me? I'm just completely inexperienced and definitely not a traditionally attractive person.
