My guy friend started sending me heart emojis all of a sudden then after a while started ignoring me completely. What does that mean?

We were classmates for years and he never sent me those heart emojis untill lately. He would send me the heart-eyes emoji or a red heart and stuff. I never sent him thoses back. He once sent me thsi "i bad at English but i can say i love you,..." (it`s a long poem) out of the blue. I just laughed it off. Then he started ignoring me completely. He wouldn`t even look at me. I`m confused because I thought he was just joking.

He was into you, then he realized that you don't like him back. Then he decided to get over you by ignoring you.
